Port
Port and cigars belong together: The sweetness, depth, and oxidative character of port balance the oils and full smoke of a premium cigar in a way few other pairings can match and Sun of a Gun Cigars runs one of the most serious port programs in Yuma, Arizona and the broader Southwest.
A quick guide to port: Port is a fortified wine from the Douro Valley in Portugal, made by adding grape spirit during fermentation to preserve natural sweetness. The result: higher alcohol, richer texture, and the kind of slow-sipping profile that's tailor-made for an hour-long cigar.
The port styles we keep on the menu:
Ruby port is young and fruit-forward, bright cherry, plum, and pairs beautifully with mild-to-medium cigars like Arturo Fuente Hemingway or Ashton Classic.
Tawny port is aged in oak (10, 20, 30, and 40 years), nutty, caramelized, with notes of dried fig and toffee; a textbook match for Padron 1964, Diamond Crown Maximus, and Liga Privada No. 9. Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) port offers vintage-style intensity without the price tag; perfect for Don Carlos, My Father, and AJ Fernandez cigars.
Vintage port, when available, is for the most special occasion; pair with a Fuente Opus X, God of Fire, or a Padron 1926 Anniversary.
How to taste port with a cigar: Light the cigar first, take three or four steady puffs to establish the flavor, then sip the port. The sweetness will lift the cigar's spice. Re-sip every few puffs. Don't rush, a glass of tawny should last as long as the cigar.
Our recommendation: New to port-and-cigar pairing? Start with a 10-year tawny and a Diamond Crown Robusto. It's the most forgiving combination on the menu, and it shows you exactly why this pairing has been a tradition for two hundred years.
