Boveda Packs for Cigars: The Complete Humidity Guide (2024)

If you've spent serious money on premium cigars, the last thing you want is to ruin them with bad humidity. Dry cigars crack and burn hot. Over-humidified cigars grow mold and taste musty. Boveda packs solve both problems.

This guide covers everything: what Boveda packs are, which size to use, 65% vs. 69% RH, how long they last, and how to get your humidor dialed in correctly.

What Are Boveda Packs?

Boveda makes 2-way humidity control packets for cigars using a patented saturated salt solution inside a semi-permeable membrane. The solution maintains a precise relative humidity (RH) level — absorbing excess moisture when too humid and releasing moisture when too dry. No charging or refilling needed.

Key advantages: Precise RH control (±1%), no refilling or distilled water, works in any size container, available in multiple RH levels (58%, 62%, 65%, 69%, 72%, 75%, 84%), and uses food-safe non-toxic salts.

Boveda 65% vs. 69%: Which Is Right for Your Cigars?

Boveda 65 RH is best for long-term storage and tightly packed humidors. Lower humidity slows aging, reduces mold risk, and is preferred by experienced smokers who want a firmer draw. Most premium cigars like Padron, Arturo Fuente, and Opus X are shipped at 65–68% RH.

Boveda 69 RH is best for newer humidors, drier climates (like Yuma, AZ), and smokers who prefer a slightly looser draw. If your humidor is in an air-conditioned room or very dry environment, 69% helps compensate.

Our recommendation: If you're in the Southwest or anywhere with desert-dry air, start with 69%. In more humid climates or for long-term aging, go with 65%.

What Size Boveda Pack Do You Need?

Boveda packs come in gram weights: 8g, 13g, 60g, 320g. The size corresponds to how much moisture the pack can hold — not the humidity level. Use 8g for travel humidors (up to 25 cigars), 13g for standard desktop humidors (25–75 cigars), 60g for medium cabinet humidors (75–150 cigars), and 320g for large cabinets and walk-in humidors.

General rule: Use one 60g pack per 25 cigars of capacity. Boveda packs don't over-humidify, so extra packs just work less hard.

How to Use Boveda Packs in Your Humidor

Step 1 — Season your humidor (new humidors only): Wipe the interior lightly with distilled water, place 2–3 Boveda 84% packs inside for 2 weeks, then replace with your target RH level before adding cigars.

Step 2 — Place packs directly in contact with humidor air — on top of cigars, on shelves, or in the tray. Multiple packs distributed around the humidor work better than one large pack in a corner.

Step 3 — Monitor with a digital hygrometer accurate to ±2%. Step 4 — Replace when hardened: when the salts solidify and the pack feels like a hard plastic card, replace it.

How Long Do Boveda Packs Last?

In a well-seasoned humidor opened occasionally, a 60g Boveda pack typically lasts 2–4 months. In a frequently opened humidor in a dry climate like Arizona, expect 4–8 weeks.

Pro tip: When a pack is about half depleted (still has some give), move it to a small travel case and put a fresh pack in your main humidor. You get more use out of every pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you recharge a Boveda pack?

No. Boveda packs are designed for single use. Placing hardened packs in distilled water changes the salt ratios, making RH control unreliable. Just replace them.

Can you mix different RH levels in the same humidor?

No. Mixing 65% and 69% packs causes them to fight each other, and neither will stabilize correctly. Pick one level and stick with it throughout the humidor.

Do Boveda packs work in Tupperware or zip-lock bags?

Yes — Boveda packs work in any airtight container. Many cigar smokers use large zip-lock freezer bags or Tupperware tupperdors as affordable alternatives to wooden humidors.

Are Boveda packs safe for cigars?

Properly sized Boveda packs won't over-humidify. The 2-way salt solution equilibrates to the stated RH and stops releasing moisture once that level is reached.
