Cigar Ashtrays — Built for Premium Cigars

A cigar ashtray is not a cigarette ashtray. If you've ever tried resting a premium Churchill or Toro in a standard ashtray only to watch it roll off the edge, you know exactly what we mean. Cigar ashtrays are engineered for the unique dimensions, burn rate, and resting needs of a premium handmade cigar.

What Makes a Cigar Ashtray Different?

Deep wells: A premium cigar produces significantly more ash than a cigarette — proper technique involves building a long ash for flavor and temperature control. Cigar ashtrays have deep, wide wells to accommodate this.

Cigar rests / notches: The most important feature. Cigar rests are cut wide enough to cradle a 52–60 ring gauge cigar without it rolling. Look for rests with a gradual taper — cigars taper slightly toward the foot, so a V-shaped rest won't cradle them properly.

Heavy base: A good cigar ashtray won't tip. Look for ceramic, cast iron, crystal, or stone options that have genuine weight.

Number of rests: Single-cigar (personal use), double (paired smoking), or 4–8 rest models for lounge use.

Types of Cigar Ashtrays

Ceramic / Porcelain Ashtrays: Classic, affordable, easy to clean. Ceramic is the most common material and holds up well to outdoor use. Look for glazed interiors for easy cleaning.

Crystal Ashtrays: Elegant and heavy. Crystal ashtrays make a statement on any desk or humidor top. Heavier weight means better stability. A favorite gift for the cigar smoker who has everything.

Cast Iron Ashtrays: Built for outdoor use. Nearly indestructible. Cast iron maintains its temperature and won't tip in wind. The best choice for patio or outdoor smoking areas.

Stainless / Metal Ashtrays: Modern aesthetic, lightweight, dishwasher safe. Great for travel or patio use.

Tabletop vs. Freestanding: For lounges or dedicated smoking rooms, freestanding pedestal ashtrays eliminate the need to reach down. For personal desk or patio use, tabletop models are more practical.

How to Clean a Cigar Ashtray

1. Let the ashtray fully cool before handling — cigar ash retains heat. 2. Empty ash into a fireproof trash receptacle. 3. Rinse with warm water and a small amount of dish soap. 4. Use a soft brush for ceramic wells and crystal ashtrays. 5. Dry completely before use — moisture and cigar ash creates an unpleasant odor.

Tip: Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda in the well between uses to neutralize odor between cleanings.

Cigar Ashtray Buying Guide

For personal use, 1–2 rests are sufficient. Choose ceramic or crystal with a 2-inch well depth. For paired smoking, 2 rests with ceramic or cast iron works well. For lounge or group settings, look for 4–8 rest models in cast iron or ceramic with 3-inch wells and consider freestanding pedestal styles.
