Cigar Cutter Guide: Straight Cut vs. V-Cut vs. Punch

The cut you make determines how your cigar draws. A bad cut can wreck an excellent cigar. Here's what you need to know about each type of cigar cutter.

The Straight Cut (Guillotine)

The most common cut. A sharp double-blade guillotine removes the top of the cap cleanly, opening the full diameter of the cigar for drawing.

Best for: Most cigars, especially Parejos (straight-sided cigars) like Robustos and Toros. Pros: Clean cut, opens the draw fully, very forgiving. Cons: Cutting too deep can unravel the wrapper. Tip: Cut just above the cap line — the subtle ridge where the wrapper folds over. Remove only what you need.

The V-Cut (Cat's Eye)

A V-shaped notch cut into the cap. Creates a concentrated draw through a wedge-shaped opening rather than the full diameter.

Best for: Figurados (torpedo/belicoso shapes), smokers who prefer a tighter draw. Pros: Keeps the cap largely intact (less unraveling risk), concentrates flavors. Cons: Can be too tight on thinner cigars; not ideal for 60+ ring gauge cigars. Tip: The V-cut is especially good on Opus X Perfecxions and other torpedo-shaped cigars.

The Punch Cut

A circular punch removes a small disc from the center of the cap without removing the cap entirely.

Best for: Travelers, smokers who want minimal draw restriction, everyday smokes. Pros: Prevents wrapper unraveling entirely; very clean. Cons: Can gunk up quickly; doesn't work on figurados with pointed heads. Tip: Clean your punch with a toothpick after each use to keep it cutting cleanly.

What About Scissors?

Cigar scissors work but require excellent sharpness and some practice. Not recommended for beginners — an uneven cut with dull scissors is worse than a cheap guillotine.

Our Recommendation

For most smokers: A quality double-blade guillotine with stainless steel blades. A sharp $15 cutter beats an expensive dull one every time. For figurado enthusiasts: Add a V-cutter for torpedo shapes. For the pocket: A punch cutter is the most convenient tool you can carry.
