A premium cigar is a perishable product. Buy a $30 Opus X, leave it on your desk for a week, and you've wasted $30. Buy the same cigar, keep it in a proper humidor, and it will smoke perfectly in six months — or six years. Understanding how to store cigars correctly is as important as knowing how to buy them.
Why Cigars Need Humidity
Premium cigars are made from living tobacco leaves that continue to interact with their environment after rolling. Too dry (below 60% relative humidity) and the oils dry out, the wrapper cracks, and the cigar burns hot and harsh. Too wet (above 75% RH) and mold risk increases, the draw becomes tight, and burning becomes uneven.
The sweet spot: 65–70 degrees Fahrenheit temperature, 65–70% relative humidity.
Types of Humidors
Desktop Humidors: Cedar-lined wooden boxes in various sizes, appropriate for 25–100 cigars. The interior Spanish cedar lining absorbs and releases moisture, is naturally antimicrobial, and imparts a subtle cedar flavor. Look for: Spanish cedar lining, tight-sealing lid, quality hygrometer, and a humidification device.
Tupperdors and Coolerdors: Airtight plastic containers (Tupperware or coolers) used with Boveda packs. Unglamorous but extremely effective. Best for large collections, value-conscious smokers, and bulk storage.
Travel Cases: Small, crush-resistant cases (5–10 cigars) for transporting cigars. Not meant for long-term storage — just for keeping cigars in good condition during travel.
How to Season a New Humidor
A new cedar humidor must be seasoned before use — the dry cedar will absorb moisture from your cigars rather than providing it.
Method 1 — Boveda Seasoning (Recommended): Place one or two 84% Boveda packs inside the empty humidor. Close the lid and leave for 14–21 days. Swap to 69% or 72% Boveda packs for ongoing maintenance. Add cigars.
Method 2 — Shot Glass Method: Place a small glass of distilled water (not tap water) inside the humidor on a piece of plastic to avoid direct contact with wood. Leave for 24–48 hours. Check hygrometer — if humidity is 65–70%, you're ready. Repeat if needed. Never wipe the cedar interior with water directly — it can warp or crack the wood.
The Easiest Humidity Solution: Boveda Packs
Boveda packs (also called two-way humidity packs) automatically add or absorb moisture to maintain a specific humidity level. They're the most foolproof solution for most cigar smokers.
62% Boveda: for longer-term storage, aging, drier climates. 65% Boveda: recommended balance for most premium cigars. 69% Boveda: popular for Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos. 72% Boveda: for fresh or green cigars, or high-altitude environments. Replace when the pack becomes stiff or loses its gel feel — typically every 2–4 months.
Monitoring Humidity: Hygrometers
Every humidor should have a hygrometer (humidity gauge). Digital hygrometers are more accurate than analog. Calibrate yours annually with a salt test or a Boveda calibration kit.
Common Storage Mistakes
Storing different blends too close together — strong full-body cigars can affect milder ones over time. Opening the humidor constantly — each opening drops humidity. Using tap water — minerals damage humidification devices; use distilled only. Overfilling — pack cigars with a little room for airflow. Forgetting about it — check once a month.
