How to Refill a Butane Lighter: Step-by-Step Guide for Cigars

A dead lighter at the wrong moment is every cigar smoker's minor nightmare. Butane torch lighters — the standard tool for lighting premium cigars — are refillable and can last years with basic maintenance. Here's exactly how to refill one, plus fixes for the most common problems.
What You Need Before You Start
Premium butane fuel (5x refined or higher) is essential for cigar torch lighters. Cheap, impure butane clogs the jets and ruins lighters. Recommended brands: Colibri, Xikar, Nibo, and Vector. You'll also need your lighter and a small flathead screwdriver for adjusting the flame level.
Step-by-Step: How to Refill a Butane Lighter
Step 1: Let the lighter cool down
Never refill a lighter that's been recently used. Allow 30 minutes for a hot lighter to cool completely. Warm lighters can cause butane to flash or leak unpredictably.
Step 2: Bleed the lighter first
Before adding new butane, release any remaining gas and air mixture in the tank. Find the refill valve on the bottom of your lighter (usually a small brass nozzle). Using a small screwdriver or pen tip, press the center pin until you hear all the gas escape — hold until the hissing completely stops (5–10 seconds). This step is critical and the most often skipped. Old gas mixed with air causes inconsistent flames and relighting problems.
Step 3: Adjust the flame to minimum
Turn the flame adjustment wheel all the way to the minimum (–) setting. Refilling with the flame set high wastes butane and can cause overfilling.
Step 4: Invert the lighter and the butane can
Turn both the lighter and the butane can upside down. The refill valve on the lighter points up; the nozzle of the butane can points down. This is the correct orientation — butane needs to flow as a liquid, not a gas.
Step 5: Connect the nozzle and fill
Press the butane can's nozzle firmly into the lighter's refill valve. Hold steady and press down for 3–5 seconds. You'll feel the lighter get slightly cold as the butane enters (this is normal — liquid butane is very cold). Release, wait 2 seconds, then fill again for another 3–5 seconds. Repeat 3–4 times in short bursts.
Step 6: Wait 2–3 minutes before lighting
The liquid butane needs to warm back to room temperature and stabilize before ignition. If you try to light immediately, you'll get an inconsistent or no flame.
Step 7: Adjust the flame and test
Turn the flame adjuster up slightly (not maximum — that wastes fuel and creates an overly large flame that chars cigars). Test the lighter and adjust to your desired flame height.
Common Problems After Refilling
No flame at all: Most likely cause is air in the tank from an incomplete bleed. Solution: bleed the lighter again completely and refill.
Flame immediately goes out: Possible overfill. Set flame to minimum and try again. If it persists, the nozzle jet may be partially clogged — use compressed air to blast the jet area.
Spitting or sputtering flame: Impure butane or mixed gas. Bleed entirely and refill with premium 5x refined butane.
Butane leaking from refill valve: The valve O-ring may be worn. Many lighter manufacturers sell replacement O-ring kits. Premium lighters like Xikar and Colibri often repair or replace under warranty.
Best Butane for Cigar Lighters
For cigar lighters (especially multi-jet torches), use at minimum 5x refined butane. Recommended: Xikar High Performance Butane, Colibri Premium Butane (5x filtered), Vector Nitro Butane (high purity, affordable), and Nibo Butane. Avoid generic convenience store butane or any butane not labeled as refined or stating its purity level.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I refill my butane lighter?
This depends on how often you smoke. A typical single-jet lighter holds enough butane for 15–20 cigar lightings. Heavy smokers might refill weekly; occasional smokers every few weeks.
Can I use any butane in my Xikar or Colibri lighter?
These brands recommend using their own or similarly premium (5x refined) butane. Using cheap butane can void the warranty and clog the jets.
Why does my lighter feel cold after refilling?
Liquid butane is very cold (around -1°F / -18°C at room temperature). The expansion of liquid to gas as you fill cools the lighter's metal body. This is completely normal.
How do I know if my lighter is full?
Most lighters have a small viewing window showing fuel level. When full, pressing the refill valve causes butane to immediately come back out. Stop filling before it overflows.
