Handing out cigars to mark a birth is one of the older traditions in the business, and it has a practical logic: a cigar takes an hour, which is exactly the amount of time the people who love you want to sit with you and hear about it.
How many to buy
Count the people who will actually smoke one, then add a few. Ten to twenty covers most families. Boxes usually hold 20 to 25, so a single box often does it.
What to choose
Most of the people receiving one will not be regular cigar smokers. Choose mild to medium and a shorter size, so nobody is holding a churchill they cannot finish.
- Ashton Classic — mild, smooth, hard to dislike.
- Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story — about thirty minutes, and memorable.
- Nub — short, wide and forgiving.
- Padrón Series — if the group knows cigars.
For the father
Many fathers keep one back to smoke on a milestone birthday. If that is the plan, choose something that ages well: Opus X, Padrón 1926 or an Añejo. Store it at 65–70% humidity and it will be better in five years than it is today.
Bands and wrapping
Custom bands take time to order. If the date is close, a factory-packed assortment or a set in a travel humidor looks the part without the wait.
