Opus X Cigars: Sizes, Releases and How Allocation Works

What Fuente Fuente Opus X is, every release and size we stock, why it is so hard to find, and how to buy it from an allocated retailer.

Fuente Fuente OpusX is Arturo Fuente's Dominican puro, wrapped in leaf grown at Chateau de la Fuente and released in small, allocated quantities. Sun of a Gun Cigars & Spirits in Yuma, Arizona receives an allocation, and every Opus X on our shelf today is on Opus X In Stock Now. The full line, including sold-out sizes, is on our Opus X page.

The story of Opus X

Arturo Fuente founded A. Fuente & Company in West Tampa in 1912. Decades later, Carlos "Carlito" Fuente Jr. set out to grow wrapper tobacco in Dominican soil that other growers considered unsuitable for it. In 1992 "Project X from Planet 9" was born, and with it the first Dominican puro. Fuente Fuente OpusX reached the market in 1995, and, in the Fuente Aged Selection's words, cigar enthusiasts literally lined up to buy it.

Chateau de la Fuente and the wrapper

The OpusX wrapper is grown at Chateau de la Fuente, in what Arturo Fuente describes as the rich, volcanic soil of the Dominican Republic. That soil was once deemed unsuitable for wrapper tobacco; the Fuente family cultivated a wrapper there that became the foundation of the brand. After harvest, the green tobacco hangs in curing barns while its moisture evaporates slowly. Arturo Fuente describes the finished cigar as smooth and bold, in harmony with the sweet, lingering fullness of the OpusX wrapper.

Why is Opus X so expensive?

Short answer: a wrapper few others grow, extra time in the ageing room, and limited production. None of that is our claim; it is how Arturo Fuente and the cigar press describe the brand.

  • The wrapper. Arturo Fuente says the OpusX wrapper is grown at Chateau de la Fuente in soil once deemed unsuitable for wrapper tobacco. Cigar Aficionado reports that Carlos Fuente Jr. planted 37 acres of Cuban seed there in the early 1990s, and that Dominican-grown wrapper remains a relative rarity.
  • The tobacco stays in the family. According to Cigar Aficionado, Fuente does not sell tobacco from Chateau de la Fuente to other manufacturers, so the leaf appears only on Fuente-made cigars.
  • The ageing. Cigar Aficionado reports that OpusX cigars are rolled in a dedicated area of the factory and aged in enclosed cabinets for a minimum of one year, where other Arturo Fuente cigars age on open shelves.
  • Limited production. Cigar Aficionado describes OpusX as made in limited quantities and released sporadically through the year, and has called it one of the most elusive brands on the market.
  • Demand. When OpusX launched in November 1995, Cigar Aficionado recounts, demand so far outran supply that early retailers limited customers to two cigars each, and Fuente at first sold it only in the eastern United States for lack of inventory.

Two pieces of context are worth having. Halfwheel notes that supply was very limited in the early days and that the line has since become more readily available. And Cigar Aficionado has pointed out that the steepest figures people quote tend to come from resellers and venues marking the cigar up, not from authorized retailers.

The practical advice that follows: buy from an authorized Arturo Fuente retailer and be patient about sizes. What we have today is on Opus X In Stock Now. If the size you want is out, cigars like Opus X covers alternatives, and Opus X vs. Padrón compares it with the other name collectors ask us about most.

The lines

Fuente Fuente OpusX

The original. Arturo Fuente lists fourteen vitolas, from the Belicoso XXX (4 5/8 x 49) to the PerfecXion A (9 1/8 x 47). We carry the Robusto, PerfecXion No. 2, PerfecXion No. 4, PerfecXion 8-8-8, Pussy Cats, No. 77 Baby Shark and Templo de Oro #13.

Oro Oscuro

OpusX wrapper that has been extra aged and fermented, giving what Arturo Fuente calls a robust, balanced and dark finish. We stock the Robusto and Double Robusto.

Angel's Share

Named for the winemaker's term for what evaporates from the barrel, and inspired by the aged tobacco the family lost in a fire. Where OpusX is typically made from the top priming of the plant, Angel's Share uses wrapper from the middle priming. See the Angel's Share Robusto.

Forbidden X

Arturo Fuente calls Forbidden X the evolution of OpusX: the rarest selections of tobacco from Chateau de la Fuente, aged by Carlito in "Forbidden" barrels in a secret area of the factory. The line has four vitolas, El Beso Prohibido, Deseos D' Amor, Pasion D' Amor and Amor Sensual; we carry the Amor Sensual.

20th Anniversary Father & Son

From the Opus X 20th Anniversary Father & Son line, we carry the Power of the Dream.

Opus X Lost City

In 2004 Andy Garcia filmed a scene of The Lost City at Chateau de la Fuente, and Carlito Fuente planted tobacco there in the summer so he could. That crop became Opus X Lost City, in seven vitolas from the Robusto to the 9 1/4-inch Carlito's A. Full story in our Lost City guide.

How allocations work at Sun of a Gun

Arturo Fuente decides how many boxes each authorized retailer receives and when. A shop cannot order more by paying more, so sizes appear and disappear, and rare releases arrive once, then are gone until the next shipment. More on the process in how Opus X allocation works.

  • See it first: Opus X In Stock Now updates automatically as allocations land and sell through.
  • Join the waitlist: when a size is sold out, join the waitlist on its product page.
  • Hear first: members of The Humidor Society see new allocations early, Collectors 24 hours ahead and Connoisseurs 12 hours ahead.
  • Ask us: call the lounge at 928-276-3500 and a tobacconist will tell you what is in the humidor today.

If the size you want is sold out, everything allocated that is on our shelf today is on Rare Cigars In Stock Now, and the full allocated range, including Añejo and God of Fire KKP, is on Ultra Rare & Allocated.

How to buy

Frequently asked questions

Is Opus X allocated?

Yes. Arturo Fuente decides how many boxes each authorized retailer receives and when, and no shop can order more. Every Opus X on our shelf today is on Opus X In Stock Now.

Can I buy a single Opus X?

Many sizes are sold as singles. Travel humidor sets, selections and assortments are sold complete, and each product page shows the options available.

What is the difference between Opus X, Lost City and Heaven and Earth?

Fuente Fuente OpusX is the original line. Lost City comes from tobacco Carlito Fuente planted at Chateau de la Fuente so Andy Garcia could film The Lost City there in 2004. Heaven and Earth is a series of rare vintage releases from the Fuente Aged Selection, including Rare Black and Carlito's X Rare Purple.

How do I hear first when Opus X arrives?

Join the waitlist on any sold-out product page, and join The Humidor Society: Collectors see new allocations 24 hours ahead, Connoisseurs 12 hours ahead, then everyone.

Do you ship Opus X?

Yes, nationwide, including Puerto Rico. Orders ship within 1–2 business days from Yuma, Arizona. Shipping is $9.99 flat and complimentary on orders of $125 or more.

How can I tell a real Opus X?

Buy from an authorized Arturo Fuente retailer. Marketplace listings well above or below retail are the ones to be careful with.

Why is Opus X so expensive?

Arturo Fuente grows the wrapper at Chateau de la Fuente and, as Cigar Aficionado reports, keeps that tobacco for Fuente-made cigars, ages OpusX in enclosed cabinets for at least a year, and makes it in limited quantities. Scarce supply and steady demand do the rest.

How long is Opus X aged?

Cigar Aficionado reports that OpusX cigars are aged in enclosed cabinets for a minimum of one year before release. Fuente Aged Selection releases carry secondary bands showing the year the cigars were rolled.

Is Opus X still hard to find?

It is scarce, though less so than in the 1990s. Cigar Aficionado describes it as made in limited quantities and released sporadically; halfwheel notes it has become more readily available than in its early days. See Opus X In Stock Now for what is on our shelf.
