Padrón Cigars Buying Guide
Padrón makes six lines, all Nicaraguan puros, all grown on the family's own farms around Estelí. The differences come down to how long the tobacco is aged, whether the cigar is box-pressed, and which wrapper you choose. This guide is written by the tobacconists at Sun of a Gun Cigars in Yuma, Arizona.

Natural or Maduro?
The Padrón Series, 1964 Anniversary, 1926 Serie and Family Reserve come in two wrappers over the same blend. Natural is sun-grown and drier, leading with coffee, cedar and pepper. Maduro is darker and sweeter, with cocoa and espresso. Neither is stronger than the other; the difference is flavor, not power.
Which Padrón should I buy first?
- New to cigars: Dámaso No. 15, mild and creamy.
- Everyday smoke: Series 2000 for a shorter one, Series 4000 for a toro.
- The classic: 1964 Exclusivo, the size most Padrón smokers name first.
- Full-bodied: 1926 No. 9.
- Special occasion: anything in Family Reserve.
How to read the sizes
Cigar sizes are given as length in inches by ring gauge, where the ring gauge is the diameter in 64ths of an inch. A 5 1/2 x 50 is five and a half inches long and just under an inch thick. Wider ring gauges burn cooler and slower; shorter cigars concentrate the flavor.
Buying singles, 5-packs or boxes
We sell most Padrón sizes three ways. A single lets you try a size before committing. A 5-pack keeps a week of them on hand. A full box is usually our lowest price per cigar, and the cigars age together in their own cedar.
Storage
Keep cigars at roughly 65-70% relative humidity. Every order we ship leaves our walk-in humidor the day it is packed, so what arrives is ready to smoke.
Are Padrón cigars counterfeited?
The 1964, 1926, Family Reserve and Padrón Black lines each carry an individually numbered band, which Padrón introduced specifically to protect buyers. Buy from an authorized retailer and check the band.
