How pipe tobacco differs from cigar tobacco

A cigar is tobacco rolled in a tobacco leaf. Pipe tobacco is cut, blended and often cased or topped with flavoring, then burned in a bowl with a steady draw of air. The result is cooler and, in aromatic blends, considerably sweeter.

The main families

  • Virginia: the base of most blends. Naturally sweet, grassy, sometimes tangy with age.
  • Burley: drier and nuttier, low in sugar, burns slowly. Common in American blends.
  • Oriental and Turkish: small-leaf tobaccos with a dry, spicy, incense-like character.
  • Latakia: fire-cured over wood, smoky and heavy. The signature of English blends.
  • Perique: fermented under pressure in Louisiana, peppery, used sparingly.
  • Cavendish: a process rather than a leaf — steamed and pressed, usually sweetened.

Aromatic or English?

  • Aromatic: topped with flavoring — vanilla, cherry, rum. Sweet room note, easy to start with.
  • English: built on Latakia and Orientals, smoky and savory, no added flavoring.
  • Virginia and VaPer: straight Virginia, or Virginia with Perique. Sweet with a pepper edge.

Getting started

  1. Pack in three stages: loose to the top, press to half, press again to two-thirds. The draw should feel like a straw.
  2. Charring light: light the surface, let it go out, tamp the raised ash flat.
  3. True light: light again and settle into a slow, steady cadence.
  4. Sip, do not pull. Fast puffing burns hot and bites the tongue.
  5. Tamp gently as the ash builds, and let the bowl cool between smokes.

Storage

Pipe tobacco keeps best sealed, around 65–70% humidity. Tinned tobacco can age for years; bulk tobacco is best kept in a jar rather than its bag.
