La Gloria Cubana launched Serie R in 1999, and the brand says it was the first time a major premium brand released a 6 x 60 as a regular-production cigar. A 2013 General Cigar press release credited Serie R with starting the large-ring, full-flavor craze. The name goes back to an 1885 Cuban brand, per Cigar Aficionado; by La Gloria Cubana's own history, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Sr. launched it in the United States, in Miami's Little Havana, in 1972.

About La Gloria Cubana Serie R
The original Serie R is made at the El Credito factory in the Dominican Republic, which Cigar Coop describes as a standalone rolling room at General Cigar Dominicana. In 2013 the line went to Nicaragua with Serie R Estelí and Serie R Black, the brand's first Nicaraguan lines, and each gained a maduro in July 2016.

La Gloria Cubana calls the original Serie R medium to full-bodied, with coffee, chocolate and spice, and says the Broadleaf of the maduro brings extra spice and depth. It describes Serie R Estelí as rich and medium to full-bodied, with spice, coffee and a nutty, floral character, and the Estelí Maduro as full in strength and deep in sweetness. The Serie R Black wrapper, from the 2009 crop, was fermented for a full year and aged two and a half years, per the 2013 launch release; General Cigar's Cigar World calls the Black Maduro a powerhouse of flavor.
The only Serie R on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 lists since 2004 is the Serie R Estelí No. 54, No. 22 in 2014 at 91 points. We carry the Estelí in the No. 60, natural and maduro.
