Short answer: match the weight of the bourbon to the body of the cigar. A 90-proof wheated bourbon suits a medium cigar. A barrel-proof bourbon needs a full-bodied one. In our lounge, the cigars we set beside bourbon are the Padrón 1926 Serie, Liga Privada No. 9 and Rocky Patel Decade.
What makes a whiskey a bourbon
The term is defined in federal regulation (27 CFR 5.143). A bourbon must be:
- made from a fermented mash of at least 51 percent corn;
- distilled at 160 proof or less;
- put into charred new oak barrels at 125 proof or less;
- bottled at 80 proof or more;
- distilled and aged in the United States.
Nothing in the rule requires Kentucky. New charred oak is where much of the character comes from, and it is why bourbon sits comfortably beside a cigar.
The label terms that matter for pairing
- Straight bourbon has spent at least two years in charred new oak, with no coloring or flavoring added.
- Bottled in bond comes from one distiller in one distilling season, is aged at least four years and is bottled at exactly 100 proof (27 CFR 5.88).
- Barrel proof or cask strength means the bottling proof is no more than two degrees below the proof at which the whiskey left the barrel (27 CFR 5.87). These are the heaviest pours on the shelf.
- Wheated is a style, not a legal class. The distiller uses wheat in place of rye as the second grain. Maker's Mark, W.L. Weller and the Van Winkle bourbons are wheated by their producers' own description.
- Small batch and high rye have no legal definition. They describe a style, and each distiller sets its own meaning.
How to match them
Proof to body
Start with strength. The higher the proof, the fuller the cigar needs to be to hold its place. A mild Connecticut Shade cigar disappears behind a barrel-proof pour, and a full-bodied maduro can flatten a soft 80-proof bourbon.
Grain to wrapper
Then look at the second grain. Wheated bourbons lean toward the softer side of the category and sit well with medium cigars and with Maduro wrappers. Bourbons made with more rye bring more spice, and they stand up to fuller, more peppery cigars. Four Roses publishes its two mash bills at 20 and 35 percent rye; Woodford Reserve publishes 72 percent corn, 18 percent rye and 10 percent malted barley.
Pairings from our lounge
Our pairing menu sets three cigars beside bourbon:
- Padrón 1926 Serie. Box-pressed, made from tobacco aged five years, and described by Padrón as full-bodied. It has the weight for a bottled-in-bond or barrel-proof bourbon.
- Liga Privada No. 9. Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper over a Brazilian Mata Fina binder, with Nicaraguan and Honduran filler. Drew Estate rates it full, and we pour a high-proof bourbon with it.
- Rocky Patel Decade. Finished in a Sumatra wrapper. A 90-proof bourbon is a good place to begin.
We also like a wheated bourbon with the Padrón 1964 Anniversary Maduro.

At the table
- Taste the bourbon on its own first, then with the cigar.
- A few drops of water open a barrel-proof bourbon and bring it closer to the cigar.
- Keep water beside you and sip it between the two.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best bourbon to drink with a cigar?
There is no single best. Match the weight: a 90-proof bourbon with a medium cigar, a bottled-in-bond or barrel-proof bourbon with a full-bodied one.
Does a higher-proof bourbon need a stronger cigar?
As a rule, yes. A barrel-proof bourbon can overwhelm a mild cigar, so reach for a full-bodied one such as the Padrón 1926 Serie or Liga Privada No. 9.
Does bourbon have to come from Kentucky?
No. Federal rules require bourbon to be distilled and aged in the United States, from at least 51 percent corn, in charred new oak barrels. They do not name a state.
