Ferio Tego cigars at Sun of a Gun Cigars & Spirits, the Diamond Crown Lounge in Yuma, Arizona. Ferio Tego was launched in 2021 by Michael Herklots and Brendon Scott, the former vice president and chief financial officer of Nat Sherman International, after the two acquired the Timeless, Metropolitan and Epoca brands. Its cigars are made by hand in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Honduras, and the line is distributed in the United States by Davidoff of Geneva USA. We keep two Ferio Tego blends in the humidor.
The two blends
- Summa — the company's first regular-production blend developed entirely by Ferio Tego, released in 2023 and made at the Quesada family's Tabacos de Exportación in the Dominican Republic. Ecuador Corojo wrapper, Ecuador Sumatra binder and Nicaraguan and Dominican filler; the maker describes it as full flavored and full bodied. We carry the Robusto (5 x 50), Toro (6 x 50) and Gordo (6 x 60), each sold in hinged Okume boxes of 10.
- Generoso 2022 — the Nicaraguan half of Ferio Tego's annual limited release, made by the Plasencia family in Estelí. A dark sun-grown Honduran wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, rated full by the maker. One size, a 6 x 50 Toro, packed ten to a box built as a humidor.
Summa or Generoso: which Ferio Tego should you choose?
| Blend | Made by | Wrapper | Binder and filler | Sizes | Box |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summa (2023) | Quesada family, Tabacos de Exportación, Dominican Republic | Ecuador Corojo | Ecuador Sumatra binder; Nicaraguan and Dominican filler | Robusto 5 x 50, Toro 6 x 50, Gordo 6 x 60 | Hinged Okume box of 10 |
| Generoso 2022 | Plasencia family, Estelí, Nicaragua | Dark sun-grown Honduran | Nicaraguan binder and filler | Toro 6 x 50 | Box of 10 built as a humidor |
Choose Summa for three sizes and the spice of a Corojo wrapper; choose Generoso for a single toro from an annual, limited blend.
Why does Generoso carry a year?
Generoso and its sister blend, Elegancia, were Ferio Tego's first cigars, released in October 2021, according to Cigar Aficionado, and both return each year. Herklots told halfwheel the yearly blends take a cue from wine culture: a consistent house style, with some variation from one edition to the next. Cigar Aficionado calls Generoso the fuller-bodied of the pair; Elegancia comes from the Quesada family under an Ecuadorian wrapper.
Corojo, Sumatra and sun-grown: reading the Ferio Tego blends
Both Ferio Tego blends on this page are built around wrapper choices worth knowing before you buy. Corojo is a Cuban-seed tobacco named for the El Corojo farm in Cuba's Vuelta Abajo, prized for spice and a reddish-brown leaf, and today grown in Ecuador, Honduras and Nicaragua; Summa wears an Ecuador Corojo wrapper. Sumatra seed originated in Indonesia and is widely grown in Ecuador, where it gives a darker leaf with a little natural sweetness; in Summa it is the binder. Sun-grown wrappers are raised in full sun rather than under shade cloth, which thickens and darkens the leaf and generally brings more body; Generoso 2022 wears a dark sun-grown Honduran leaf.
Choosing a size. Summa comes in three. The Robusto (5 x 50) is the shortest smoke, the Toro (6 x 50) adds an inch at the same ring, and the Gordo (6 x 60) is wider, so it holds more filler and takes longer to finish. Ring gauge is a cigar's diameter in 64ths of an inch, so a 60 ring is close to an inch across. Generoso is a single 6 x 50 toro.
When Ferio Tego is out

Both blends are rated full by the maker, so smoke them after a meal, keep water or a drink close and draw slowly. For a full-bodied cigar you can order online, Padrón cigars and Liga Privada No. 9 cigars are on our shelf, and Davidoff, which distributes Ferio Tego, also owns Camacho cigars and AVO cigars.
