Short answer: a cigar ashtray needs a deep bowl and a wide stirrup. Cigarette ashtrays are too shallow to hold the ash of a toro and too narrow to rest one without crushing the wrapper.
What makes a good one
- A deep bowl. A cigar produces far more ash than a cigarette, and ash left in the bowl keeps the room smelling stale.
- A wide stirrup. The rest should cradle a 50–60 ring gauge without pinching. Narrow grooves crack wrappers.
- Weight. Ceramic, crystal or stone stays put. Light metal slides.
- Enough rests. Two for company, four for the lounge.
Materials
Ceramic and crystal are the common choices and both clean easily. Stone and concrete are heavy and durable. Melamine travels well for outdoor use.
Ash etiquette
Let the ash build to about an inch. It insulates the ember and keeps the burn cool. Tap gently rather than stubbing, and lay the cigar down to go out on its own rather than crushing it — crushing is what makes a room smell bad.
