The story
Ashton owner Robert Levin handed out VSG samples at an industry trade show in 1999, and Cigar Aficionado credits the line with helping to usher in the era of the strong cigar. Carlos "Carlito" Fuente Jr. blended it around a dark Sumatra-seed wrapper grown by the Oliva Tobacco Co. in the foothills of the Andes in Ecuador, over aged Dominican binder and filler. Most VSGs are box-pressed; the Wizard, Eclipse and Pegasus are rolled round.
Which VSG to buy
- The award winner: the Sorcerer, a 7 x 49 Churchill.
- The classic size: the Robusto, 5½ x 50.
- For travel: the Eclipse, each in its own tube.
- A short, thick smoke: the Enchantment perfecto or the Pegasus.
