Oliva Serie V Melanio is named for Melanio Oliva, grandfather of Gilberto Oliva, who first grew tobacco in Pinar del Río, Cuba, in 1886. Oliva introduced the line at the 2012 IPCPR trade show in box-pressed sizes: an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and filler built around Jalapa tobacco. The Melanio Maduro followed in 2013 under a Mexican San Andrés wrapper. The Melanio Figurado was Cigar Aficionado's 2014 Cigar of the Year, and three more Melanios have made the magazine's Top 25 since.

Natural or Maduro?
The same Nicaraguan binder and Jalapa-led filler sit underneath both. The Natural wears Ecuadorian Sumatra; the Maduro a darker Mexican San Andrés leaf, which Cigar Aficionado described on the 2025 Maduro Robusto as dark cocoa, dried fruit and caramel over a mineral edge. The Robusto is the easiest way to compare them: the Natural made the Top 25 for 2016 and the Maduro for 2025.
