Short answer: the Shark is a Fuente shape, not a single cigar. It starts as a round belicoso at the head and turns into a square press at the foot, and Fuente has made it in the Añejo, Fuente Fuente OpusX and Don Carlos lines. We carry the Opus X Baby Shark, the Añejo Shark No. 77 and a set of two of each.

The shape
Fuente calls the Shark one of the world's most famous shapes and says it was the first torpedo to move from a round parejo body to a square press. halfwheel reports that the shape is best known from the Añejo line, which added the No. 77 Shark in 2001, and that Fuente has since used it for several OpusX releases and a very limited Don Carlos.
Opus X Baby Shark vs. Añejo Shark
These are the two sharks we carry.
- The tobacco. The Baby Shark is a Fuente Fuente OpusX, a line halfwheel describes as made entirely from tobacco grown at Chateau de la Fuente. The Añejo Shark wears a maduro wrapper that Fuente ages in cognac barrels.
- The size. The Baby Shark is the slimmer cigar: 5¼ x 51, per Cigar Aficionado. Fuente lists the Añejo Shark at 5⅞ inches with a ring that opens from 48 to 64.
- The price. At our listed singles in October 2026, $34.99 for the Baby Shark and $24.99 for the Añejo Shark.
- Side by side. The Fuente Shark Collection holds two of each for $107.99, against $119.96 bought one at a time.
Opus X Baby Shark vs. the Opus X Shark
Cigar Aficionado describes the Baby Shark as slightly shorter and slimmer than the larger OpusX Shark. halfwheel lists the standard Shark at 5⅝ x 54, the size of the Opus X Destino al Siglo Shark, which began shipping in August 2022 in boxes of 20. The OpusX PerfecXion No. 77 Shark came first, sold only in special box sets before it became a periodic box release, per halfwheel.
Don Carlos Eye of the Shark
The Don Carlos shark wears a Cameroon wrapper over Dominican tobacco. halfwheel reports it was released in 2015 to mark Carlos Fuente Sr.'s 80th birthday, and Cigar Aficionado named it its Cigar of the Year for 2017. Fuente's site lists the Personal Reserve Eye of the Shark at 5¼ x 52; halfwheel's review lists 5¾ x 52. Its product page shows live stock and takes waitlist requests when it is sold out.
Where did the Shark shape come from?
halfwheel credits the Shark name to Marvin Shanken and Wayne Suarez, Carlito Fuente's brother-in-law; Carlito called it the SS Shark, one S for each of them. The No. 77 came from a visit to Sea World, where he noticed sharks whose two pectoral fins looked like a pair of sevens.
The shape is older than its name. halfwheel reports that Fuente handed out a prototype in 1999 at a Cigar Family Charitable Foundation event, under the working names Round To Square Shape and Bull Shark, with a rounded cap in place of today's pointed head. The first Shark sold in stores was the Añejo No. 77 in 2001, a year after the Añejo line itself.
What size is the Opus X PerfecXion 77 Shark?
Arturo Fuente's Opus X page lists the PerfecXion 77 Shark at 5½ x 52, packed 36 to a box. That is a quarter inch longer and one ring wider than the Baby Shark.
Which shapes do Opus X and Añejo share?
Two, both in our humidor in October 2026: the Shark and the 8-8-8. Cigar Aficionado traces Añejo to 1998, when Hurricane Georges left Fuente short of Opus X wrapper and Carlos Fuente Jr. rolled an Opus X bunch in aged Connecticut Broadleaf instead. The shared shapes are the clearest way to taste what each wrapper does.
| Shape | Opus X | Añejo |
|---|---|---|
| Shark | Baby Shark, 5¼ x 51 (Cigar Aficionado); PerfecXion 77 Shark, 5½ x 52 (Fuente) | Shark No. 77, 5⅞ inches, 48 to 64 ring (Fuente) |
| 8-8-8 | PerfecXion 8-8-8, 6⅞ x 44 (Cigar Aficionado, halfwheel) | Añejo No. 888, 6⅞ x 44 (Fuente) |
The 8-8-8 is a long, slim lonsdale finished with a tapered torpedo cap. halfwheel dates the Añejo version to August 2014 and the Opus X version to August 2018, and reviewers have measured the Añejo a little shorter than Fuente's listed length.
How have the Fuente sharks been rated?
- Añejo Shark No. 77. Cigar Aficionado scored it 91 points in August 2024 and rated it medium-full.
- Opus X Destino al Siglo Shark. halfwheel scored it 91 and found it creamier, sweeter and nuttier than the core Opus X blend, and less strong than many Opus X sizes.
- Opus X Baby Shark. Cigar Aficionado's first report on it said a rating would follow in Cigar Insider. It carries the Chateau de la Fuente tobacco of every Opus X and is the shorter of the two sharks in stock.
How do you cut and light a shark?
Cut the round head as you would a belicoso: a small straight cut just below the point, widened only if the draw feels tight. The square foot takes more care. Toast the four corners as well as the center so the burn starts even. Our guides to cutting a cigar and lighting a cigar cover the tools.
Which Fuente shark should you smoke first?
The Baby Shark for Opus X tobacco, the Añejo Shark for a maduro wrapper, or the Fuente Shark Collection to smoke both on the same day. The wider ranges are on Arturo Fuente Opus X Cigars and Arturo Fuente Añejo Cigars.
