Montecristo is one of the most widely recognized names in cigars. The Cuban original cannot be sold in the United States, so the Montecristo sold here comes from Altadis and is made in the Dominican Republic or Nicaragua, depending on the line. We carry Montecristo cigars and cigarillos in our Yuma humidor.
What you are buying
The Dominican-made lines — Classic, White and Platinum — sit on the smoother side and are known for consistency rather than power, which is why they are a common first premium cigar. Espada, Espada Oscuro and the Nicaragua Series are made in Nicaragua and are a different smoke entirely: Altadis describes Espada as "a bold, spicy and deeply satisfying smoke" and the Nicaragua Series as a full-bodied Nicaraguan puro.
How it compares
- Classic and White: Connecticut Shade wrappers, milder than Liga Privada or Opus X, and closest in style to Ashton Classic or AVO Classic among the lines we carry.
- Espada and the Nicaragua Series: the bold, full-bodied side of the brand, made in Nicaragua.

Frequently asked questions
Are Montecristo cigars Cuban?
The ones sold in the United States are made in the Dominican Republic or Nicaragua. Cuban cigars remain illegal to sell here — see our guide on why Cuban cigars are illegal in the US.
Is Montecristo good for a beginner?
The Classic and White series are: smooth, consistently built and on the milder side. Espada and the Nicaragua Series are bold, full-bodied cigars for smokers who already enjoy strength.
