La Flor Dominicana Cigars: A Guide to Double Ligero, Andalusian Bull and More

La Flor Dominicana is Litto Gomez's house, and it is known for strength. Dominican-made, often ligero-heavy, and responsible for the chisel: a flattened head you bite open rather than cut.

La Flor Dominicana is Litto Gomez's house, and it is known for strength. Dominican-made, often ligero-heavy, and responsible for the chisel: a flattened head you bite open rather than cut. The LFD lines we carry are below; live stock is on the collection page.

Air Bender

Habano wrapper, full-bodied. Chisel Natural, Matatan and Tubo, plus a Maduro version in the Chisel and Matatan.

Double Ligero

Ecuadorian Sumatra Sun Grown wrapper over a ligero-heavy filler, which is where the name comes from. Full. 654, 660, 700 and the 8½-inch Digger, with a Maduro version of each plus a Chisel Maduro.

Ligero and Ligero Cabinet Oscuro

Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, full. L-500 and the 7 x 70 Ligero 707. The Cabinet Oscuro uses a Sumatra Oscuro wrapper.

Reserva Especial and Suave

Reserva Especial wears an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, with a Broadleaf Maduro version. Suave is the milder end of the house: Maximo, Grand Maduro No. 5, Gobernador and Tubo.

Oro

Nicaraguan Habano wrapper. No. 6, No. 8, Tubo No. 6 and the Chisel Tubo, plus Oro Maduro.

The one-offs

Chapter I in Brazilian Habano, Capitulo II in Nicaraguan Colorado, La Nox in Brazilian Maduro, La Volcada in Mexican San Andrés Maduro, Solis in Ecuadorian Habano, the Cameroon Cabinet Chisel, and the Andalusian Bull — a 6½ x 64 Ecuadorian Corojo that was named Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado in 2016.

Which should you buy?

  • Milder: Suave.
  • The signature shape: any Chisel.
  • Full strength: Double Ligero or Ligero.

Frequently asked questions

How do you smoke a chisel?

Either bite the flattened head gently open or make a shallow straight cut. The shape spreads the smoke across the palate.

Is LFD too strong for a beginner?

Much of it is. Start with Suave.
