The wrappers come from Cigar Aficionado's ratings; Fuente's own Chateau Fuente page lists no blend for the series. Every size is 6¾ x 50, about 171 mm long with a 50 ring gauge, per Fuente.

A Chateau, sleeved in cedar

Fuente's list of Chateau Fuente cigars runs to nine sizes, from the 4½ x 50 Chateau Fuente to the 7⅝ x 54 Royal Salute, and the Double Chateau is one of only three that come in all three wrappers, with the Chateau Fuente and the Royal Salute. Fuente says every cigar in the series is aged before it is individually wrapped in cedar. The sleeve guards the wrapper in handling and lends a light cedar note as the cigar rests; leave it on in the humidor and slide it off before you light.

The name runs from cigar to farm, not the other way: Fuente says its Chateau de la Fuente farm was named in the spirit of the Chateau Fuente cigars. Cigar Aficionado places the farm in the mountains of Bonao and reports that it grows all of the wrapper for Fuente Fuente OpusX. The company itself goes back to 1912, when Arturo Fuente founded A. Fuente & Company in West Tampa, Florida; every line we carry is on Arturo Fuente cigars.

Ratings and tasting notes

Natural: Cigar Aficionado scored it 89 in February 2015, grassy and floral to start, with citrus and vanilla bean, then 88 in December 2020 and 88 again in October 2024, when it called the cigar mild, creamy and flavorful.

Maduro: the magazine first rated this size in December 2000, at 85. It scored 90 in December 2021 and rated it medium-full, with earth, leather and chocolate that stay constant throughout, herbal notes at times and touches of coffee and spice, and 89 in April 2025, noting a dark, inky wrapper and a spicy, woody core.

Sun Grown: 89 in February 2022, rated medium-full: a big, dark, imposing cigar with an even burn and an earthy, coffee-toned smoke, layered with almond shell, vanilla and dried pine needles before a light, creamy coffee finish.

Choosing a wrapper

  • The gentle one: the Natural, under Connecticut Shade, which Cigar Aficionado rates mild.
  • The highest-scored: the Maduro, under dark Connecticut Broadleaf, 90 in December 2021.
  • Coffee and spice: the Sun Grown, under Ecuadorian sun-grown leaf, rated medium-full.

For a shorter Chateau, the 4½ x 50 Chateau Fuente comes in the same three wrappers; for a longer one, the 7⅝ x 54 Royal Salute. Both are on Chateau Fuente. Fuente's flagship sizes, from the 8-5-8 to the Churchill, are on Arturo Fuente Gran Reserva, and more long cigars from every brand on Churchill cigars.

What to pour with the Double Chateau

Fuente publishes no pairing for the series, so these are our house suggestions, the same as on our Chateau Fuente page: a smooth Irish whiskey, a light Speyside Scotch or a glass of Champagne with the Natural; a 90-proof wheated bourbon or a rye with the Sun Grown; and a sherry-cask Scotch or an aged rum with the Maduro. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide has more, and in the lounge you can ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.

Keeping them fresh

Store them at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, in a humidor or a sealed bag with a two-way humidity pack. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
