Florida's cigar roots, on our shelf

Some of the families on our shelf started in Florida. Arturo Fuente founded A. Fuente & Company in West Tampa in 1912, and the family still rolls Opus X, Don Carlos and Hemingway by hand at Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia in the Dominican Republic. J.C. Newman moved to Tampa's Ybor City in 1954, into the 1910 factory now known as El Reloj, where it still rolls cigars by hand; Tampa is known as Cigar City for the factories that once filled Ybor City. José Orlando Padrón opened his Miami factory in 1964, the year the 1964 Anniversary Series is named for, and La Gloria Cubana began at the El Credito factory in Miami's Little Havana.

Rolled in Tampa today: The American Robusto ($20.99), which J.C. Newman calls the first and only 100% American cigar, and the Angel Cuesta Rosado Toro ($23.99), both made at El Reloj. See every Made in Tampa cigar, the J.C. Newman and Arturo Fuente collections, and La Gloria Cubana. Listed prices on 21 October 2026; each product page shows the current price and stock.

For the boat, the golf course and the lanai

Florida cigars travel: to the marina, the first tee and the beach house. Our house suggestion is a tubed cigar, which rides safely in a bag or a golf cart: the Padrón 1926 Serie No. 90 Tubo ($30.99), the Opus X Lost City Double Robusto Tubo ($48) or an Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Edición de Aniversario Double Robusto Tubo ($45). Every tube we carry is on tubo cigars. Listed prices on 21 October 2026; each product page shows the current price and stock.

Opus X, the first Dominican puro

In 1992 Carlito Fuente's "Project X" produced the first Dominican puro, from wrapper grown at Chateau de la Fuente in Bonao. Fuente Fuente OpusX reached the market in November 1995, first sold only in the eastern United States, and it is still allocated to authorized retailers in small batches. Our guide to Opus X allocation explains how it reaches the shelf.

Heat, humidity and your cigars

Florida's air is warm and humid much of the year, so the care is about heat and dampness rather than dryness. Boveda describes its packs as two-way humidity control, adding moisture when the air is dry and absorbing it when it is damp, and advises keeping cigars between 65% and 72% relative humidity. Our house suggestions: keep the humidor indoors in air conditioning, out of direct sun and off the lanai; open it now and then so the air moves; and if you see white specks, read our guide to cigar mold vs. plume before you worry. Boveda packs and humidors are on the site, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.

Rum, coffee and the cigar

House suggestions: an aged rum such as Ron Zacapa 23 or Flor de Caña 25, both on our spirits menu, beside a Padrón Family Reserve No. 45 ($32.99); a morning café beside a Padrón 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo; and, for coffee in the leaf itself, Drew Estate's coffee-infused Tabak Especial. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide covers spirits more broadly.
