Planning for the season

The South Fork fills up between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and so do the weekends. Our house suggestion: order a week or more ahead of a holiday weekend, since orders leave the humidor within 1–2 business days and carrier delivery dates are estimates, and keep a box at the house so guests are covered. Hosting a cigar evening

Our house suggestion is one cigar per guest plus a few spares, in two or three strengths: a box-pressed Padrón 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo ($17.99) for most guests, a fuller Liga Privada No. 9 Robusto ($18.99) for regulars, and one allocated cigar, such as an Opus X PerfecXion No. 4 ($27.99), for the host. Closing the house for the winter

When the house closes after Labor Day, our house suggestion is to bring the cigars back to the city with you rather than leave them in an unheated room. Keep them sealed in a humidor or a container with a fresh Boveda pack; Boveda recommends replacing a pack about every three months, and advises keeping cigars between 65% and 72% relative humidity. Opus X, from Chateau de la Fuente

Fuente Fuente OpusX began as Carlito Fuente's "Project X" in 1992: a cigar made entirely of Dominican leaf, with wrapper grown at Chateau de la Fuente in Bonao, in soil other growers had considered unsuitable for it. It reached the market in November 1995, and Cigar Aficionado named the OpusX Double Corona its Cigar of the Year for 2005 and the Reserva d'Chateau for 2023. The full story is in our Opus X guide.
