A small shape with a following

In a 2005 Cigar Aficionado interview, Carlito Fuente explained that smoking was getting harder in more places, so the family wanted a small shape that still delivered full flavor; he said the Short Story became perhaps the most imitated shape. Cigar Aficionado's 2012 history of the family calls the four-inch cigar an instant hit, and in 2019 the magazine put it on its list of small cigars for when you are short on time.

The Maduro took longer to reach shops. halfwheel traces it to around 2000, when fewer than 100 were handed to guests on a Cigar Family Charitable Foundation trip. Its first release to retailers came in the summer of 2011, when, citing the Fuentes, halfwheel reported 1,200 boxes of 25; it returned in 2012, limited to 1,000 boxes, and again in 2015. Fuente's 2019 catalog describes its Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper as available in limited quantities.

How the Hemingway began

By the 1980s the perfecto, a cigar tapered at both ends, had all but disappeared. Carlos "Carlito" Fuente Jr. recalls on Fuente's website that when the family began making cigars in the Dominican Republic in 1980, "at that time nobody was making shaped cigars." Cigar Aficionado credits his father, Carlos Fuente Sr., with finding the old perfecto molds in an Ybor City warehouse, bringing them to the Dominican factory and teaching his master roller the shape; Fuente dates the Hemingway line to 1983. Fuente y Cia., and halfwheel describes the room at Planta No. 1 where the line is rolled as the Hemingway Salon. Ratings and tasting notes

Short Story Natural: Cigar Insider, Cigar Aficionado's newsletter, scored it 92 in March 1997 and 90 to 91 four more times through March 2022, and Cigar Aficionado scored it 93 in December 2013, 92 in April 2021 and 90 in February 2025. The 2013 review praised its sweet spice and an excellent draw and burn; the 2022 note found salt and pepper lifted by vanilla, brown sugar, nut and coffee; the 2025 tasting found toast, almond paste, honey and cream. halfwheel scored it 90.

Short Story Maduro: Cigar Aficionado scored it 90 in February 2012, 91 in February 2016 (a near-black perfecto with dark chocolate, orange zest and rock salt, ending on a sweet, bready finish), 90 in April 2020 and 91 in December 2022, when black and red pepper opened before raisin and marshmallow. In 2023 the magazine named it in its Bang for the Buck roundup of value cigars.

Short Story or another size?

Fuente's chart also lists the 4½ x 45/54 Between the Lines, with two wrappers twisted together, the 7½ x 54 Untold Story in Maduro only, and the 9 x 52 Masterpiece, boxed 10; all are on our Arturo Fuente Hemingway page. The tapered sizes carry two ring gauges because the diameter changes along the cigar.

How to cut and light a Hemingway

Cigar Aficionado's advice for a pointed head is to cut where the curve of the head starts to straighten, leaving some of the cap glued in place, and it notes that punch cutters can't be used on cigars with pointed heads; a straight cut or a V-cut does the job. Leave the closed foot as it is and toast the small tip gently: it catches quickly, and the flavor opens as the burn reaches the wider body. Our guides to cutting a cigar cover the tools.

Fuente publishes no pairing for the Hemingway, so these are our house suggestions: an aged rum or a wheated bourbon with the Cameroon-wrapped Natural, and a sherry-cask Scotch or an espresso with the Maduro.
