Davidoff, AVO's parent company, refreshed the whole AVO portfolio at the start of 2015, and Syncro Nicaragua was the first new line. The Syncro name refers to synchronizing tobaccos from several regions in a single blend. Fogata, Spanish for "bonfire," followed as an extension: halfwheel calls its sizes nearly identical to the original apart from being round, and Davidoff described the idea as matching the more intense Nicaraguan leaf with softer, creamier Dominican tobacco. Avo Uvezian said the name came from bonfires, a favorite setting of his for time with close friends. For the line's tenth anniversary in 2025, Davidoff released a box-pressed 6⅝ x 50 AVO Syncro 10th Anniversary Limited Edition, which we don't stock.

Ratings and tasting notes

Toro, 6 x 54: 93 points and No. 16 on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 for 2015, rated medium.

Special Toro, 6 x 60: the largest cigar in the Syncro Nicaragua line, per Davidoff. Cigar Insider scored it 89 in October 2015, with earth, sweet peanut and smoky woods; Cigar Aficionado scored it 88 in June 2022 and rated it medium to full; Cigar Coop scored it 91. halfwheel's September 2015 review found baker's spices, creamy cedar, leather and dark cocoa at the start, a raisin sweetness that peaked in the middle third, then almonds and buttery bread.

Fogata Special Toro, 6 x 60: halfwheel reviewed the 4½ x 52 Short Torpedo, a Fogata size we don't list, in September 2016 and found creamy oak and cinnamon throughout, with hay, almonds, roasted coffee and leather and a maple sweetness.

Choosing one

  • The Top 25 size: the Toro, 6 x 54 and box-pressed.
  • The widest box-press: the Special Toro, 6 x 60, the same blend in the line's largest format.
  • Round, under a Habano wrapper: the Fogata Special Toro, 6 x 60, which our AVO guide counts as the fullest of AVO's four Syncro blends.

More squared cigars from every brand are on box-pressed cigars, and more Top 25 cigars on Top 25 cigars.

What to pour with AVO Syncro Nicaragua

Our house suggestions from the bar, as in our AVO guide: Syncro Nicaragua holds its own against a higher-proof bourbon or a rye, and Fogata is good company for an aged rum or an old fashioned. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide walks through the method. In the lounge, ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.

Keeping them fresh

Store them at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, in a humidor or a sealed bag with a two-way humidity pack. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
