From letters to names

Cigar Coop reported the Maduro's launch at the 2016 IPCPR trade show in four sizes known by letters: the M (4¾ x 52), G (6¼ x 54), TG (6 x 60) and a new L (5½ x 46). Cigar Aficionado's report on the November 2020 revamp lists the Maduro in the same four dimensions as the Robusto, Toro, Double Toro and Corona Gorda, each in boxes of 25, and says the Shade and Maduro tobaccos became older and slightly stronger, with added viso leaf.

The Pearl of the Sea, revived

Perla del Mar, the "Pearl of the Sea," was a long-discontinued Cuban brand later made in Tampa, and J.C. Newman revived it in 2012, Cigar Aficionado reports; J.C. Newman traces it to Cuba, where four brothers began hand-rolling it in 1905. The first revived cigars were rolled at Tabacos San Rafael in Nicaragua before production moved to J.C. Newman's own PENSA factory in Estelí, which Eric and Bobby Newman built in 2011. "I wasn't satisfied with our Perla del Mar brand, and I wanted to make it better," Drew Newman, J.C. Newman's general counsel, told Cigar Aficionado when the company revamped the line in November 2020: older, slightly stronger tobacco in the Shade and Maduro from added viso leaf, a new Corojo blend, new bands and boxes, and a Tampa-style press that leaves the cigars more rectangular than the old square press. All three wrappers are compared on our Perla del Mar page, and every J.C. Newman cigar on J.C. Newman.

Ratings and tasting notes

Double Toro, 6 x 60: Cigar Aficionado scored it 89 in October 2023: a blocky, box-pressed cigar under a very dark wrapper, with cedar, earth, coffee bean and honey, then dry cocoa powder. Cigar Coop scored it 87 in November 2022, finding coffee and earth throughout, with cedar, mineral and dried fruit behind them and white pepper growing late, at medium strength and body.

We found no Cigar Aficionado rating for the other three sizes. J.C. Newman's own description is a dark, robust flavor.

Choosing a Maduro

  • The shortest: the Robusto, 4¾ x 52.
  • Slim: the Corona Gorda, 5½ x 46, which began as the L in 2016.
  • The classic proportion: the Toro, 6¼ x 54.
  • The rated size: the Double Toro, 6 x 60, 89 from Cigar Aficionado.

The same four sizes come under an Ecuadorian Corojo-seed wrapper on Perla del Mar Corojo. More Broadleaf and other dark wrappers from every brand are on maduro cigars, and more pressed cigars on box-pressed cigars.

What to pour with Perla del Mar Maduro

We found no drink pairing from J.C. Newman, so this is our house suggestion: an aged rum or a bourbon, with the sweetness to meet the coffee and cocoa, or a dark roast coffee in the afternoon. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide has more, and in the lounge you can ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.

Keeping them fresh

Store them at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, in a humidor or a sealed bag with a two-way humidity pack. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
