Arturo Fuente lists eight Oro Oscuro sizes, from the 4⅝ x 49 Belicoso XXX to the 7 x 48 Reserva D'Chateau. In July 2023 the company added tins of three in the Robusto, PerfecXion X and Reserva D'Chateau sizes, as halfwheel and Cigar Coop reported from that year's PCA trade show; halfwheel described the tins as regular but limited production.

Oro Oscuro sizes

Sizes as Arturo Fuente lists them; for the 2023 tins, halfwheel listed the PerfecXion at 6¼ x 49. Arturo Fuente also makes the Belicoso XXX (4⅝ x 49), PerfecXion No. 4 (5⅛ x 43) and Super Belicoso (5½ x 52) in Oro Oscuro; we do not list them.

The 2015 Rosado Oscuro Oro

In late November 2015 Arturo Fuente shipped a limited, darker OpusX, the Fuente Fuente OpusX Rosado Oscuro Oro: a yellow box of fifteen cigars, three each of the PerfecXion No. 4, Robusto, Fuente Fuente, PerfecXion X and Reserva D'Chateau. halfwheel described its rosado oscuro wrapper, from the Chateau de la Fuente farms, as darker than typical OpusX, with colors that "skew to reddish brown and near black at times," and noted a gold ribbon at the foot of each cigar. Cigar Coop rated the Robusto 92 in April 2017, calling the wrapper a dark cinnamon color and finding cocoa and cherry early.

What to pour with Oro Oscuro

Arturo Fuente publishes no pairing, so these are our house suggestions. For a dark, extra-aged wrapper, a sherry-cask Scotch such as the Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak, or an aged rum. More in our cigar and whiskey pairing guide.

How is Oro Oscuro different from regular Opus X?

The difference lies in how the wrapper is treated, not where it grows. Standard Fuente Fuente OpusX is a Dominican puro under wrapper grown at Chateau de la Fuente in Bonao. For Oro Oscuro, Arturo Fuente selects OpusX wrapper and gives it extra aging and fermentation, which the company says yields a robust, balanced and dark finish. Binder and filler are Dominican in both. The wider family also includes Angel's Share, made with middle-priming wrapper, and Opus X Lost City, grown from an off-season 2004 planting at the same farm for the film The Lost City. Which Oro Oscuro size should you choose?

Let your time and the ring gauge decide. The Robusto (5¼ x 50) is the shortest size we list and a natural first look at the blend. The Fuente Fuente (5⅝ x 46) is slimmer, so the wrapper plays a larger part in each puff. The Double Robusto (5¾ x 52) adds length and girth, and a wider ring tends to burn cooler and slower. The PerfecXion X (6¼ x 48) and Reserva d'Chateau (7 x 48) are the long smokes, and we list both in tins of three.

Keeping a tin of three
