Sizes named for music

Avo Uvezian was a jazz pianist, and the XO sizes read like a score. Preludio, the prelude, is the 6 x 40 corona larga, the slimmest XO. Intermezzo, a musical term for a short interlude, is the 5 x 50 robusto; earlier Intermezzos measured 5½ x 50. Legato, smooth and connected, is the 6 x 54 toro that AVO added at the 2014 trade show. Maestoso, a direction meaning majestic, is the 7 x 48 Churchill, the longest XO we carry. XO also includes a 5 x 42 Notturno, which we don't list.

The Intermezzo and Legato also come in metal tubes; AVO added the Legato Tubo in 2017. A tubo is the same cigar sealed in its own tube, which protects it in a pocket, a golf bag or a gift box.

AVO and the 2015 relaunch

AVO began in 1987, when Avo Uvezian worked with Hendrik "Henke" Kelner on a cigar first sold in Puerto Rico as Bolero and renamed AVO in 1988, and Davidoff has distributed the brand since 1995. When Davidoff relaunched AVO, reaching U.S. retailers in January 2015, halfwheel reported that XO was one of four regular lines kept, with Classic, Domaine and Heritage; Cigar Coop reported that XO carried over with new packaging and bands while the blend stayed the same. Ratings and tasting notes

Legato, 6 x 54: Cigar Coop scored it 90 in October 2015 and found it mild.

Intermezzo, 5 x 50: Cigar Coop scored it 89 in March 2016: wood, cream and black pepper with subtle grass and nut, a touch bolder than the Legato. Body moved from mild-to-medium into medium in the second half, while strength stayed mild to medium throughout.

Maestoso and Preludio: we found no review of either size, so the notes above, and Davidoff's wood, spice and ripe fruit, are the guide.

Choosing an AVO XO

• The shortest: the Intermezzo, 5 x 50, or the Intermezzo Tubo to carry.
• The slimmest: the Preludio, 6 x 40, where the wrapper carries more of each puff.
• The toro: the Legato, 6 x 54, the size Cigar Coop scored 90, or the Legato Tubo.
• The longest: the Maestoso, 7 x 48.

XO and AVO Classic share an Ecuadorian Connecticut-seed wrapper over Dominican tobacco; XO is the aged one. More mild cigars from every brand are on mild cigars, more of this wrapper on Connecticut Shade cigars, and the rest of the house on Davidoff cigars.

What to pour with AVO XO

We found no drink pairing from Davidoff for XO, so this is our house suggestion: a coffee, a light rum or a soft wheated bourbon, nothing that would cover a mild-to-medium cigar. Keeping them fresh
