The CAO behind it
Tim Ozgener told Cigar Aficionado his father, Cano Ozgener, started the business in 1968 "out of the basement of our home," from a love of meerschaum pipes. The first C.A.O. cigar came out in 1995, and ST Cigar Group bought the company in January 2007 (Cigar Aficionado). Cigar Aficionado reported in 2018 that CAO cigars "continue to be sold and manufactured by General Cigar," which is owned by Scandinavian Tobacco Group.

Choosing a format
- To carry: the Tubo, 4¾ x 30, sealed in its own tube for a jacket pocket or a golf bag.
- The fullest draw: the Petit Corona, whose 40 ring gauge gives more smoke per draw than the 30-ring sizes.
- The shortest smoke: the Cigarillos, 4 x 30, ten to a tin.
If you like Moontrance
- Vanilla on its own: CAO Bella Vanilla, which CAO says "features the extract of pure Madagascar vanilla beans."
- Cream and whiskey: CAO Eileen's Dream, which CAO says is infused with coconut milk, cream, white chocolate truffles and Irish whiskey.
- Bourbon with vanilla: the M by Macanudo Vanilla Bourbon, on M by Macanudo, and more on vanilla cigars.
Cigar Aficionado doesn't score flavored cigars like these: in its "Cigar Truths" feature (November/December 2013) it says, "We do not rate flavored cigars or any type of machine-made cigar." Every flavored line we carry is on flavored and infused cigars, and every dessert flavor on sweet cigars.
What to pour with Moontrance
CAO pairs Moontrance with a rye or a glass of Syrah. From our bar, our house suggestion: a cup of coffee with the Tubo or the cigarillos. In the lounge, ask the bar, or see the spirits menu.
Keeping them fresh
Infused aromas travel, so keep these in their own humidor or a sealed bag inside yours, away from your other cigars, at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
