Liga Privada No. 9 Flying Pig cigars at Sun of a Gun, Yuma

Flying Pig Cigars

The Flying Pig is Drew Estate's short, fat perfecto with a pigtail cap. Drew Estate lists it at 3 15/16 x 60 and says the size and pigtail are "based on a photograph in an 1895 cigar salesman's size selection catalog." Only a few bunchers and rollers at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Estelí, Nicaragua are certified to make it, and Drew Estate releases the Flying Pigs seasonally, in spring and fall. These are the Flying Pigs in our walk-in humidor in Yuma, Arizona.

A short history

halfwheel reports the first Liga Privada No. 9 Flying Pig shipped in November 2009, 2,000 boxes of 12, at 4⅛ inches. The T52 Flying Pig followed in October 2010. Drew Estate then carried the shape into other lines: Kentucky Fire Cured added a Flying Pig in 2014, the Undercrown Maduro Flying Pig became regular production in 2014 after starting as a small batch for the Netherlands, and the Undercrown Shade Flying Pig arrived in 2016. The No. 9 and T52 Flying Pigs returned in 2016, and Drew Estate said in 2022 that the Flying Pigs are limited to two releases a year, one in spring and one in fall.

What the critics say

  • No. 9 Flying Pig: halfwheel scored the 2009 release 93.
  • T52 Flying Pig: Cigar Aficionado's Cigar Insider scored it 90 in February 2011.
  • Feral Flying Pig: Cigar Aficionado rated it 90.
  • Undercrown Shade Flying Pig: Cigar Aficionado scored it 89 in 2017.
  • Undercrown Maduro Flying Pig: Cigar Aficionado scored it 88 in April 2022.

How to cut and light a Flying Pig

The Flying Pig is a perfecto: it swells to a 60 ring and closes to a coiled pigtail at the head. To open it, snip the pigtail off and make a shallow straight cut just below where it meets the cap, or use a punch for a tighter draw. Light patiently and evenly; the flavor fills out as the burn reaches the full ring. Smoke it slowly, since a short cigar with a wide ring heats up when rushed. More in our cigar cutter guide, or browse cigar cutters.

Which Flying Pig to choose

  • Fullest: the Liga Privada No. 9, T52 and H99, all rated full by Drew Estate, and the larger Feral, which it calls extremely full-bodied.
  • Smoky: the Kentucky Fire Cured, with fire-cured leaf at the head; Drew Estate rates it medium and describes a smoky, savory, peat-like character.
  • Medium to full and naturally sweet: the Undercrown Maduro, under Mexican San Andrés.
  • Lightest wrapper: the Undercrown Shade, in Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade.

The newer Pigs

The H99 Flying Pig is the newest. halfwheel reports it went on sale in July 2023 at Drew Estate's Pennsylvania Barn Smoker, and Jonathan Drew called it extremely limited, because the H99 wrapper is scarce and only a few rollers at La Gran Fabrica are qualified to make Flying Pigs. The Undercrown Shade Flying Pig, added in 2016, was the sixth Flying Pig and the first with a secondary band. The Kentucky Fire Cured Pig takes its smoke from Kentucky-seed tobacco grown near Hopkinsville and fired for 14 days over hickory, oak and maple.

Common questions

What is a Flying Pig cigar? Drew Estate's short perfecto with a pigtail cap, listed at 3 15/16 x 60. Drew Estate has made it in the Liga Privada No. 9, T52 and H99 blends and in its Undercrown and Kentucky Fire Cured lines.

What is the Feral Flying Pig? The larger Liga Privada Unico version: a 5⅜ x 60 perfecto with a pigtail cap in Connecticut Broadleaf, which Drew Estate calls extremely full-bodied.

Why are Flying Pigs hard to find? Drew Estate releases them seasonally, and Cigar Coop notes they are made in limited quantities because the shape is hard to roll.

No. 9 or T52 Flying Pig? Same shape. The No. 9 wears dark Connecticut Broadleaf; the T52 wears stalk-cut Connecticut Habano. Drew Estate describes No. 9 as "bold and complex; dense earth and espresso" and T52 as "rich and satisfying; earth, black pepper, and caramel sweetness."

What is the H99 Flying Pig? The H99 blend in the 3 15/16 x 60 Flying Pig: a Connecticut Corojo and T52 Habano hybrid wrapper, grown on one Connecticut River Valley farm exclusively for Drew Estate, over a Mexican San Andrés Otapan Negro binder and filler from Nicaragua, Honduras and Pennsylvania.

Is there a milder Flying Pig? The Kentucky Fire Cured Flying Pig is the one Drew Estate rates medium, and the Undercrown Shade wears the lightest wrapper, Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade.

How many Flying Pigs come in a box? Twelve for the No. 9, T52, H99, Undercrown and Kentucky Fire Cured Flying Pigs; the larger Feral comes ten to a box.

Where can I buy Flying Pig cigars in Yuma, AZ? In the walk-in humidor at Sun of a Gun Cigars & Spirits, 1651 S Arizona Ave in Yuma, an official J.C. Newman Diamond Crown Cigar Lounge.
