Why a 2012 band on a 2015 cigar

halfwheel reported that Serie Aniversario was announced in 2012 and first scheduled for 2013, then held up in part by a fire at Fuente that August and repositioned to honor God of Fire's tenth year; the first God of Fire cigars had come out in November 2004. That is why the second bands read 2012. halfwheel called it a regular-production cigar that is treated as a limited release. All three sizes are figurados: the 56, in halfwheel's description, has a nipple foot and a short belicoso head.

Where God of Fire comes from

God of Fire is the cigar line of Keith K. Park, who founded the accessories maker Prometheus in 1992. In the spring of 2003 he raised the idea over dinner with Carlito Fuente in the Dominican Republic; Park had produced the documentary The Fuente Family: An American Dream in 2002 and had been repeatedly called "God of Fire," and Carlito suggested the name for the brand. halfwheel dates the first God of Fire cigars to November 2004, presented in limited-edition Prometheus humidors. Every God of Fire is rolled at Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia. in the Dominican Republic, over Dominican binder and filler.

Every God of Fire wears two bands. The main band reproduces the painting Prometheus Bound, and the second names the blend and the year the cigar was made, a production year rather than a harvest year. The boxes are red and black. All six blends, by Carlito, by Don Carlos, Serie B, Serie Aniversario and the two KKP lines, are compared on our God of Fire page and in our God of Fire guide.

Ratings and tasting notes

Serie Aniversario 56: halfwheel scored it 92 in November 2015. Its review found cocoa-powder sweetness on the wrapper, then a soft, marshmallow-like sweetness with restrained pepper, followed by mint, leather, medium-roast coffee and earth; green-grape sweetness and a dry matchstick note in the second third; and pepper and wood concentrated in the last two inches while staying balanced.

Serie Aniversario 54 and Serie Aniversario 60: we found no published score for either.

Choosing a Serie Aniversario

  • The longest: the 54, 7½ x 54, medium-bodied with a hint of tartness.
  • The rated size: the 56, 6¼ x 56, which halfwheel scored 92.
  • Sweeter and spicier: the 60, 5½ x 60, the widest, with a hint of cinnamon.
  • All three: the 5-Cigar Assortment.

For a somewhat more robust Ecuadorian-wrapped God of Fire, see by Don Carlos; for the boldest, by Carlito. More shaped cigars from every brand are on torpedo and figurado cigars, and more medium smokes on medium-bodied cigars.

What to pour with Serie Aniversario

We found no drink pairing from God of Fire, so this is our house suggestion: for a smooth, medium cigar, a cognac or a sherry-cask single malt Scotch; for the sweeter, spicier 60, a wheated bourbon. In the morning or on the golf course, a coffee. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide has more, and in the lounge you can ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.

Keeping and aging them

God of Fire says its cigars rest another two to three years in the aging room after rolling, and founder Keith K. Park encourages aging them longer still, much as you would a fine wine. Store them at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, and use the second band to track how long each one has rested. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
