Montecristo Classic cigars from our walk-in humidor in Yuma, Arizona: the 6 x 52 Toro and the 7 x 54 Churchill. Altadis U.S.A. builds the Classic Series on a select Connecticut Shade wrapper over a select Dominican binder and Dominican filler, rolls it in the Dominican Republic, and describes it as "on the smoother side with bountiful and creamy tasting notes complemented by an easy draw." These are U.S.-market Montecristo cigars, not the Cuban Montecristo, which cannot be sold in the United States. Choose a single or a 5-pack on each product page.

Connecticut Shade is grown under cloth, which gives a thin, golden, silky leaf; Cigar Aficionado calls the wrapper "known for its golden-brown color and mild taste profile." Cigar Coop has called the Classic long-running, and in 2019 Altadis U.S.A. put the same Connecticut Shade wrapper and Dominican fillers into a Classic mini cigarillo, sold in tins of 20, which we don't carry. More cigars in this wrapper are on Connecticut Shade cigars, and more gentle picks on mild cigars.
Tasting notes
Toro, 6 x 52: JR Cigar's Blending Room review (August 2016) found sharp spice, earth and wood in the first third, caramel and cocoa with a vanilla-like aroma in the second, and a smooth, creamy finish with no harshness or bitterness. The reviewer judged it mellow-bodied and milder than the Cuban Montecristo, noted a golden-brown wrapper with an oily sheen, an easy cold draw and an even burn, and called the Toro about a one-hour smoke.
Churchill, 7 x 54: the longest and widest size on Altadis's Classic list, with the same blend and the same caramel, cedar and cream notes over a longer evening.

Classic or Original: two Connecticut Shade Montecristos
Two Montecristo lines wear Connecticut Shade over Dominican tobacco, and their bands are easy to confuse. The Montecristo Original, sometimes called Montecristo Yellow, is the line Altadis presents as the start of the brand: Connecticut Shade over a Dominican binder and filler, with cream, cedar, leather and hay on Montecristo's list and a sweet caramel aroma. Its sizes differ from the Classic's: we carry the Original Robusto (5 x 50), Churchill (7 x 50) and No. 2 Torpedo (6 x 50). In our humidor, the Montecristo Churchill is the 7 x 50 Original, and the Montecristo Classic Churchill the 7 x 54 on this page.

Where the Classic sits among the Montecristo lines
When someone asks us for a mild Montecristo, the Classic is the one we reach for first. The White Series wears an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder. The Platinum Series is the darker Dominican Montecristo, and the all-Nicaraguan Espada and Espada Oscuro are the boldest we carry. Every line is on Montecristo cigars.
The Montecristo name
Montecristo began in Havana in 1935, when Alonso Menendez acquired the Particulares factory and created the brand, Cigar Aficionado reports, and by legend the name comes from Alexandre Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo, read aloud to the rollers. A 1972 lawsuit established exiled cigarmakers' right to market versions of brands they had made in Cuba, and in 1990 Consolidated Cigar, which became Altadis through mergers, began making Montecristo for the American market. Our Montecristo guide has the longer story.
What to pour with the Montecristo Classic
Our house suggestions for a creamy Connecticut Shade cigar: a cup of coffee or a cappuccino in the morning; later, a smooth Irish whiskey, a light Speyside Scotch or a glass of Champagne. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide has more, and in the lounge you can ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.
Keeping them fresh
Store them at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, in a humidor or a sealed bag with a two-way humidity pack. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
