Drew Estate has used the Tabak Especial name for its coffee-and-tobacco pairing since 2002. Founder Jonathan Drew Sann moved to Estelí in 1998 to set up the factory and says Nicaraguan coffee caught his attention there; Drew Estate visited coffee farms from the Segovia region to San Juan del Río Coco and credits the blend to a master barista working with a master blender. It says the blend took more than five years and builds on what it learned making Kahlua and Java cigars, and Jonathan Drew has said Tabak Especial filled the void left by Kahlua cigars.
Negra or Dulce?
Tabak Especial comes in two blends on the same coffee-infused filler and Sumatra binder. Negra is the dark roast, under the San Andrés Maduro wrapper, which Drew Estate tags dark, rich and bold. Dulce is the creamy, café con leche side, under Ecuador Connecticut Shade, and the mellower of the two. The coffee is carried in the tobacco itself, not only on the cap. Cafe con Leche is on our Tabak Especial page.

Choosing a size
- Ten short smokes: the Cafecita Negra tin, 4 x 32 cigars for a coffee break.
- The shortest full-size cigar: the Corona, 4¾ x 46.
- A fuller ring: the Robusto, 5 x 54, or the Toro, 6 x 52, both 24 to a box.
- The big ring: the Gordito, 6 x 60, added at the 2019 IPCPR trade show and packed ten to a box. Jonathan Drew called a 60 ring a must for big-ring smokers, especially in the maduro.
More dark wrappers from every brand are on maduro cigars.
What to pour with Tabak Especial Negra
Drew Estate suggests an iced Americano or a coffee liqueur with Negra. From our bar, our house suggestions for the darker coffee blends: an espresso martini, The Velvet Voice (espresso and vodka) or El Cubano (aged tequila and espresso), or simply a freshly pulled espresso with the Cafecita tin. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide keeps the house rule of matching body first. In the lounge, ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.
Keeping them fresh
Coffee-infused cigars carry their aroma, so keep them apart from unflavored cigars, in their own humidor or a sealed bag with a two-way humidity pack, at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
