Coffee in the tobacco

Drew Estate has paired coffee and cigars under the Tabak Especial name since 2002, and Jonathan Drew Sann says Nicaraguan coffee caught his attention after he moved to Estelí in 1998. Drew Estate says it spent more than five years on Tabak Especial, searching out bold Nicaraguan coffees on farms from the Segovia region to San Juan del Río Coco, and calls the result the work of a master barista and a master blender; Jonathan Drew has said Tabak Especial filled the void left by Kahlua cigars. The coffee is infused into the filler itself, so it is carried through the whole cigar, not only on the cap.

Dulce or Negra

Both blends share the coffee-infused Nicaraguan filler and Sumatra binder, so the wrapper decides. Dulce, under Ecuador Connecticut Shade, is the café con leche side and the mellower of the two. Tabak Especial Negra, under a two-year-aged Mexican San Andrés Maduro wrapper, is what Drew Estate calls its dark roast, rated mellow to medium, with earth, chocolate and espresso. Drew Estate lists both in five sizes: the 4 x 32 Cafecita, 4¾ x 46 Corona, 5 x 54 Robusto, 6 x 52 Toro and 6 x 60 Gordito. It added the Gordito in 2019, showing it at the IPCPR trade show and shipping it that July, in both blends. Every Tabak Especial we carry, with Cafe con Leche and the Cafecita Negra tin, is on our Tabak Especial page.

Choosing a Dulce size

  • The everyday size: the Robusto, 5 x 54, 24 to a box.
  • A longer sitting: the Toro, 6 x 52.
  • The slowest smoke: the Gordito, 6 x 60, ten to a box, added in 2019.

Infused tobacco tastes sweeter at a relaxed pace and turns sharp when it runs hot, so smoke it slowly. Every coffee-infused cigar we list is on coffee cigars, infused lines from every brand on flavored and infused cigars, and gentler smokes on mild cigars.

What to pour with Tabak Especial Dulce

Drew Estate suggests an iced Americano or a coffee liqueur, and a sweet or milky coffee with Dulce. Our lounge Pairing Menu groups Tabak Especial with the sweet-tooth cigars and an espresso martini, a mojito or a dessert wine. For a whiskey, our house suggestion is a smooth Irish whiskey, a mild pour for a mild cigar. In the lounge, ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.

Keeping them fresh

Coffee aroma travels, so keep Dulce in its own box or a sealed bag inside your humidor, away from unflavored cigars, at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
