Undercrown Shade is the Connecticut-wrapped Undercrown: a new blend Willy Herrera developed with the rollers behind the original Undercrown, shown at the 2015 IPCPR trade show. Drew Estate lists an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper, an Ecuadorian Sumatra binder and a filler of Dominican Criollo '98 with Nicaraguan Criollo '98 and Corojo '99, rolled at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Estelí, Nicaragua. Drew Estate rates its body medium and describes it as creamy and balanced, with earth, vanilla, caramel and pepper.

About Undercrown Shade
Undercrown began in 2011, when Drew Estate's rollers, told to stop smoking the Liga Privada inventory, blended a cigar for themselves; Undercrown Maduro came first. Drew Estate called the Shade the first cigar Herrera blended outside his Herrera Estelí brand family. Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider have rated its strength from mild to mild-medium, depending on size and year.

What to pour with Undercrown Shade
Drew Estate suggests a grapefruit soda or a hefeweizen. For a spirit, our house rule is to match the body: a smooth Irish whiskey or a light Speyside single malt, or, since Drew Estate rates the body medium, a 90-proof wheated bourbon if you want more sweetness. More in the cigar and whiskey pairing guide.
