Macanudo Cigars: A Guide to Café, Inspirado and Crü Royale

Macanudo Café, Inspirado and Crü Royale explained, with the wrapper, binder and profile Macanudo publishes for each line.

Macanudo made its name with the Café: a mellow, creamy cigar under a Connecticut Shade wrapper that Macanudo describes as approachable for beginners and rewarding for aficionados. The range has since grown into bolder, more complex blends such as Inspirado and Crü Royale. Sun of a Gun Cigars carries Macanudo cigars and ships every cigar order in humidity-safe packaging so it arrives ready to smoke.

The Macanudo Legacy

Macanudo traces its roots to Jamaica. In Macanudo's telling, the name, which means "fantastic," was picked up from Argentine polo players, and Edgar Cullman developed the first true Macanudo from the upper primings of Connecticut Shade tobacco. Connecticut Shade is grown under cloth canopies that shade the leaf from direct sun, which gives the smooth, light-colored wrapper Macanudo is known for.

Over the years the lineup has expanded into bolder territory, while the core Macanudo Café, the original mellow and creamy blend, stays firmly intact.

Macanudo Café: The Classic Choice

Macanudo Café is the flagship line; Macanudo calls it the cigar that made the brand an icon. A Connecticut Shade wrapper covers a Mexican San Andrés binder and Mexican and Dominican Piloto Cubano filler, handcrafted in the Dominican Republic. Macanudo rates it mellow, with sweetness, cream, nuts and wood, and the easy draw makes it a natural choice for a relaxed smoke with a morning coffee or after a meal.

Macanudo Café comes in a wide range of sizes, from the 4 x 36 Caviar to the 8 x 52 Prince of Wales, including the Ascot, Crystal, Duke of Devon, Diplomat, Hyde Park and Petit Corona. Whether you want a short smoke or a long one, there is a Café format for it.

Macanudo Inspirado: Bolder, More Complex, Modern

Macanudo Inspirado is where the brand stepped into bolder, more complex territory. Inspirado Orange, the first in the line, is handcrafted in Honduras with a Honduran wrapper and binder over Dominican, Honduran and Nicaraguan filler: medium-bodied, creamy and nutty with subtle spice. Inspirado White pairs an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper with an Indonesian binder and Nicaraguan and Mexican filler for a mellow-to-medium smoke with cream, spice and cedar. Inspirado Red, under an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, is medium to full, with dark fruit, black pepper and leather.

Macanudo Crü Royale: A Medium-Bodied Step Up

Macanudo Crü Royale pairs an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with a Dominican La Vega Especial binder and Brazilian, Dominican and Nicaraguan filler. Macanudo rates it medium-bodied, with notes of earth, wood and nuts, in sizes from the 4 x 60 Poco Gordo to the 6 x 60 Gigante. It is the Macanudo to reach for when you want more depth than the Café.
