Why Corojo matters

Corojo is a seed variety developed by the Rodriguez family on the El Corojo plantation in Pinar del Río, Cuba, and Cigar Aficionado noted in 2010 that Cuba no longer grows it. The same report said Julio Eiroa, patriarch of the family that owned Camacho before Davidoff, still grew Corojo-seed tobacco on his farm in the Jamastran Valley of Honduras. Camacho traces to 1961, when Simon Camacho opened a cigar factory in Miami, and Davidoff has owned it since 2008.

In 2013 Camacho relaunched as the Bold Standard, with a new scorpion logo, and reblended four lines, Corojo among them. Cigar Coop's June 2013 preview reported the wrapper moved to a fifth priming and the cigar kept as an all-Corojo puro. Before the reblend, Corojo sizes we don't carry placed No. 5 for 2010 and No. 24 for 2011 on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25.

Ratings and tasting notes

Toro, 6 x 50: Cigar Insider scored it 90 in October 2013, after the reblend: a primarily woody, peaty cigar with a touch of sweetness and an oaky finish, rated medium to full. This is the round Toro, not the box-pressed BXP.

Gordo, 6 x 60: the same all-Corojo blend at a 60 ring, 20 to a box.

Compare Camacho wrappers

For the same 6 x 50 under other wrappers, try the Camacho Broadleaf Toro from our Camacho Broadleaf page or the milder Camacho Connecticut. Camacho Triple Maduro has its own page too. More Honduran cigars from every brand are on Honduran cigars, and more Corojo wrappers on Corojo cigars.

What to pour with Camacho Corojo

Davidoff suggests a cask-strength whisky with Camacho Corojo. Our house suggestion from the bar, as on our Camacho page: a caramel-forward bourbon or a rye, which stands up to its leather and pepper. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide has more. In the lounge, ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.

Keeping them fresh

Store them at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, in a humidor or a sealed bag with a two-way humidity pack. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
