About Cuesta-Rey Cigars

The Cuesta-Rey story

Angel LaMadrid Cuesta, a young Spanish immigrant, started a cigar factory and built a reputation as a premier roller, Cigar Aficionado writes; a few years later he formed a partnership with Peregrino Rey, and Cuesta-Rey was born. J.C. Newman says the brand was once the official cigar of King Alfonso XIII of Spain, and Cigar Aficionado reports that the king named Cuesta a tobacco purveyor to the Spanish king and court. The magazine writes that Cuesta-Rey was one of Tampa's biggest cigar brands for much of the 20th century. After J.C. Newman bought it in 1958, Stanford Newman worked with Carlos Fuente Sr. to move production to Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia., which returned the brand to hand-rolled cigars. The Centenario box still reads "Gold Medal Awarded, Panama-Pacific Exposition 1915."

The 2025 Top 25: Centro Fino Pyramid No. 9

Cigar Aficionado ranked the Centro Fino Sungrown Pyramid No. 9 No. 4 on its Top 25 Cigars of 2025, at 95 points, and rated it medium-full. Its tasting note praised "rich, nutty layers with every puff," with honey, nougat and chocolate leading to a "big, buttery cashew finish." It is a 6¼ x 52 pyramid under an Ecuadorian wrapper, made in the Dominican Republic by Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia.

Choosing a Cuesta-Rey

Cuesta-Rey is not the same brand as Angel Cuesta, a separate J.C. Newman cigar rolled at El Reloj in Tampa. Diamond Crown is also made for J.C. Newman at the Fuente factory.

What to pour with Cuesta-Rey

We found no drink pairing from J.C. Newman for Cuesta-Rey, so these are our house suggestions. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide keeps a simple house rule: mild with mild, medium with medium, full with full. That points to a smooth Irish whiskey or a soft wheated bourbon with the mild Centenario, and a bourbon with some weight beside the honey and nougat of the Centro Fino. In the lounge, ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.

Keeping them fresh

Store them at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, in a humidor or a sealed bag with a two-way humidity pack. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
