How the Brazilian Maduro came about
Drew Estate showed the Brazilian Maduro at the IPCPR trade show in July 2018, when it re-branded the Herrera Estelí line, and halfwheel reported that it soft-launched in Arizona that November before shipping nationwide; Cigar Aficionado reported it began shipping in December 2018. "The Herrera Brazilian Maduro is my expression of the floral and earthy Brazilian Mata Fina tobacco," Herrera said in Drew Estate's announcement. The 2018 release listed five sizes in boxes of 25: the Short Corona Gorda (5⅞ x 46), Robusto Grande (5¼ x 52), Lonsdale (6 x 44), Toro Especial (6 x 52) and the Fino figurado (6 x 52).
What is Mata Fina?
Mata Fina is a tobacco from the Bahia region of Brazil. Drew Estate says it "is typically used for binder or filler," and that Herrera "built upon the Mata Fina wrapper" here. Herrera told Cigar Aficionado he wanted "to bring the Mata Fina to the forefront of this blend." More dark wrappers are on maduro cigars, and our maduro vs. natural cigars guide covers what a dark wrapper changes.
Ratings and tasting notes
Robusto Grande, 5¼ x 52: 88 points from Cigar Aficionado in April 2026, rated full, with notes of black licorice, charred oak and dark toast. Cigar Insider had scored it 87 in April 2019, also full, noting it "burns evenly, offering charry notes of earth, leather and wood."
Toro Especial: 90 points from Cigar Aficionado in August 2019, rated medium-full at 6 x 52, the size in Drew Estate's 2018 release: "Enrobed in a dark and oily cover leaf, this well-made cigar burns evenly." Cigar Coop scored it 89 in May 2019, finding coffee with some sweetness and a creamy edge up front, cedar and red pepper behind it, then earth and black pepper late.

Brazilian Maduro or Habano
We carry two Herrera Estelí blends. The Habano, the original from 2013, wears an Ecuador Habano wrapper over a Honduran binder and Nicaraguan filler, and Drew Estate calls it medium; its Robusto Grande was No. 15 on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 for 2021, at 93 points. The Brazilian Maduro is the darker, heavier of the two. Both are on Herrera Estelí, and Drew Estate's other lines are on Drew Estate cigars.
What to pour with the Brazilian Maduro
Drew Estate pairs the Brazilian Maduro with root beer or an English brown porter. From our bar, our house suggestion is a bourbon or an aged rum, or a sherry-cask Scotch such as the Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak with the licorice and dark toast in Cigar Aficionado's notes. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide has more, and in the lounge you can ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.
Keeping them fresh
Store them at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, in a humidor or a sealed bag with a two-way humidity pack. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
