About Java Red Cigars

The Java Red blend

Flavor Cherry first, then dark cocoa and coffee (Rocky Patel)
Blend Not disclosed by Rocky Patel
Made at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate, Estelí, Nicaragua, for Rocky Patel Premium Cigars
Strength Mild + (Rocky Patel)
Shape Square-pressed, except the round Petite Corona
Released Announced in 2017; in shops from July 2017

Four Javas, one with cherry

Java began with the Maduro, under a thick Brazilian wrapper; Rocky Patel added the Latte in 2007, under a silky Connecticut wrapper, and the Mint in 2011. Java Red arrived in 2017 as the fourth. Every Java blend is compared on our Java page, which also links the Java Latte, Java Maduro and Java Mint pages. Blind Man's Puff, reporting the launch in June 2017, noted a sweet aroma in the smoke.

The pressed Java

halfwheel's 2017 announcement listed six Java Red sizes: the Corona, Robusto, Toro and The 58 square-pressed, a 5 x 46 Wafe with an extreme trunk press, and the round 4½ x 38 Petite Corona, finished with a pigtail cap. We carry every size except the Wafe. Java Red did not get the 4 x 32 x-press that the Maduro, Latte and Mint come in. A pressed cigar sits flat and feels firm in the hand; the shape changes the feel, while the infusion and the blend set the flavor.

Tasting notes

Robusto, 5½ x 50: halfwheel's review found the first third woody and earthy, with deep earth and a charcoal note, the cap's sweetness on the lips and black pepper on the palate, which the reviewer likened to a smoked Manhattan. Sunflower-seed saltiness, earthy woods and a cinnamon aroma came through the middle with little change, and toastiness grew as the pepper faded in the final third. The reviewer rated it between medium and medium-full.

We found no Cigar Aficionado rating for a Java Red size. Rocky Patel's own description, cherry, then dark cocoa and coffee, covers the whole line.

Choosing a Java Red

  • The short one: the Petite Corona, 4½ x 38, the only round Java Red.
  • Slim and pressed: the Corona, 5 x 42.
  • The reviewed size: the Robusto, 5½ x 50.
  • Longer: the Toro, 6 x 50.
  • The widest: The 58, 5 x 58.

Every coffee-infused cigar we carry is on coffee cigars, and every flavored and infused line on flavored and infused cigars. More pressed cigars from every brand are on box-pressed cigars.

What to pour with Java Red

Rocky Patel suggests an aperitif such as a Negroni or a Manhattan, a cordial such as amaro or a tawny port, or dark chocolate, and its Java Red page also points to a cup of coffee. In the lounge, see the cocktail menu, or ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.

Keeping them fresh

Infused aromatics travel, so keep these in their own humidor or a sealed bag inside yours, away from your other cigars, at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
