Our listings use the name Maduro Especial, which Cigar Aficionado has used in its Top 25 entries; Oliva's own site calls it Serie V Maduro. The sun-grown Serie V, the other blend, has its own sizes on our Oliva Serie V page.

From limited release to regular production

According to halfwheel's history of the line, Oliva introduced the Serie V Maduro Especial in 2008 as a limited annual release that changed size from year to year. The first run wore Connecticut Broadleaf and the 2009 run a Nicaraguan Habano leaf; from 2010 on, the wrapper was Mexican San Andrés. Each of the three sizes we carry began as one of those yearly releases:

  • Torpedo, 6 x 54: the 2010 Maduro Especial, the first run in Mexican San Andrés, at 5,000 boxes of 10. Cigar Aficionado ranked it No. 18 on its Top 25 for 2010, at 92 points.
  • Toro, 6 x 50: the Maduro Especial size in both 2011 and 2012, each run 5,000 boxes of 10.
  • Double Toro, 6 x 60: first appeared as the October 2014 Maduro Especial, packed 10 to a box; halfwheel later reported it returning for a fourth straight year at 60,000 cigars.

Ratings and tasting notes

Torpedo: No. 18 on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 for 2010, 92 points, as the 2010 Maduro Especial.

Toro: halfwheel scored the December 2012 release 92, finding coffee and then pepper up front, espresso and a charred wood note through the middle, and earth, leather and a chalky minerality with dry pepper at the close.

Double Toro: halfwheel's review of the 2014 release noted peppery heat with cinnamon and light cocoa at the start, a sweeter, creamy mocha middle with a touch of leather, and black pepper returning at the end.

Choosing a Serie V Maduro

  • The Top 25 size: the Torpedo, 6 x 54, with a tapered head that takes a shallow cut.
  • The classic toro: the Toro, 6 x 50.
  • The widest ring: the Double Toro, 6 x 60, the slowest smoke of the three.

Serie V Maduro works better as a second step than a first cigar. For a gentler Oliva, see Oliva Connecticut Reserve or Oliva Serie G; for the Melanio line, Oliva Serie V Melanio. More dark wrappers from every brand are on maduro cigars, and more Nicaraguan cigars on Nicaraguan cigars.

What to pour with Serie V Maduro

We found no drink pairing from Oliva, so this is our house suggestion, from our pairing guide: echo the cocoa of the maduro with a sherry-cask Scotch or an aged rum. A higher-proof bourbon works too. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide has more, and in the lounge you can ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.

Keeping them fresh

Store them at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, in a humidor or a sealed bag with a two-way humidity pack. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
