How the Melanio Maduro came about

Oliva's Serie V arrived in 2007, which Cigar Aficionado calls the most complex and full-bodied cigar Oliva had made to that point. In 2012 Oliva refined it under an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper and named it Melanio, for Melanio Oliva, who grew tobacco in Cuba in the late 1800s; its Figurado was Cigar Aficionado's Cigar of the Year for 2014. The Maduro came out one size at a time. Cigar Aficionado reported in May 2013 that it would launch at that July's IPCPR trade show as a single torpedo; halfwheel reports the Robusto and Churchill followed in April 2014, and Cigar Coop reported that Oliva showed the Toro and Double Toro at the 2021 Premium Cigar Association trade show. The Figurado is the limited-edition size: halfwheel reported the 2020 run at 7,000 boxes of 10, and that the Melanio Maduro took over Oliva's limited holiday role once Serie V Maduro became regular production. The original Melanio, in Sumatra, is on Oliva Serie V Melanio.

Ratings and tasting notes

Torpedo, 6½ x 52: No. 6 on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 for 2024, at 95 points and medium strength; Gregory Mottola found every puff "loaded with sweet wood, sea salt and dried fruit." Cigar Snob named it its 2021 Cigar of the Year.

Robusto, 5 x 52: No. 18 on the Top 25 for 2025, at 94 points, with dark cocoa, dried fruit and caramel over a mineral edge.

Churchill, 7 x 50: No. 7 on the Top 25 for 2021, at 93 points; Cigar Aficionado found "notes of German chocolate cake," then baking spices, malted chocolate and cedar.

Double Toro, 6 x 60: 95 points from Cigar Aficionado in June 2024, rated medium, with molasses, toffee, graham cracker and spicy cinnamon; Cigar Insider had scored it 91 in 2021.

Toro, 6 x 52: 91 from Cigar Insider in August 2021, with dark chocolate, coffee and caramel, and 89 from Cigar Aficionado in February 2026, noting pumpernickel, caraway seed and eucalyptus.

Figurado, 6½ x 52: 92 from Cigar Aficionado in June 2020 and from Cigar Insider in January 2020, both rated medium: toasted nuts, cedar and espresso around a rich chocolate core.

Choosing a size

  • The first Maduro: the Torpedo, the 2013 debut size and Cigar Aficionado's 95 for 2024.
  • The newest Top 25: the Robusto, No. 18 for 2025.
  • The long smoke: the Churchill, No. 7 for 2021.
  • The widest: the Double Toro, 6 x 60 and 95 points in 2024. More 60-ring cigars are on gordo cigars.
  • The everyday size: the Toro, 6 x 52.
  • The limited one: the Figurado, the Maduro's limited-edition size.

Melanio Maduro or Melanio Natural

The same Nicaraguan binder and Jalapa filler sit under both. The Natural wears Ecuadorian Sumatra and the Maduro Mexican San Andrés, and they sell at the same price size for size. The Robusto is the easiest comparison: the Natural made the Top 25 for 2016 and the Maduro for 2025. Both are on Oliva Serie V Melanio, the broader Serie V on Oliva Serie V, its own maduro on Oliva Serie V Maduro, and every Oliva line on Oliva cigars.

What is San Andrés maduro?

San Andrés tobacco is grown in the San Andrés valley in Veracruz, Mexico, and is usually fermented long and dark, which tends to bring cocoa and earth. More dark wrappers are on maduro cigars, and more pressed cigars on box-pressed cigars.

What to pour with Melanio Maduro

Our house suggestions, for the cocoa, molasses and dried fruit in the ratings: an aged rum, a sherry-cask Scotch such as the Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak, or a caramel-forward bourbon. An espresso works in the afternoon. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide has more, and in the lounge you can ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.

Keeping them fresh

Store them at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, in a humidor or a sealed bag with a two-way humidity pack. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
