Maximus is J.C. Newman's heartier complement to the original Diamond Crown. J.C. Newman created it in 2002 to mark its 105th anniversary, and calls it the work of "three Cigar Aficionado Cigar Hall of Fame families: Arturo Fuente, J.C. Newman, and John Oliva." Carlos "Carlito" Fuente Jr. and Stanford J. Newman developed the blend, and Tabacalera A. Fuente makes it in the Dominican Republic. The wrapper is a dark Ecuadorian El Bajo Sungrown leaf grown by John Oliva Sr., from Oliva Tobacco Co.'s El Bajo farm, over Dominican binder and filler. J.C. Newman says the cigar is aged for five years and rates it medium to full.

About Diamond Crown Maximus
J.C. Newman showed the reintroduced Maximus at the PCA trade show in April 2026, with new packaging and a refined blend; Cigar Aficionado reported the company "has made the cigar a bit stronger to suit more modern tastes." The sizes and suggested prices did not change, and in August 2026 Cigar Aficionado reported that J.C. Newman expected to start shipping the new version to retailers later that month. Every rating below was given before that change.
