About Double Corona Cigars

What is a double corona?

Cigar Aficionado's glossary calls it "a big cigar, known as a prominente in Cuban cigar factories," and says double coronas "generally measure 7 1/2 to 8 inches by a 49 to 52 ring gauge." Its most famous example is the Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona from Cuba, which the glossary says once scored 99 points in a Cigar Aficionado taste test. On smoking time, the glossary puts a 7½ x 50 double corona at over an hour.

Double corona, Corona Doble or Churchill

Name Size Ours
Double corona 7½ to 8 inches at a 49 to 52 ring (Cigar Aficionado) The Macanudo Prince Philips (7½ x 49), the AVO Classic No. 3 (7½ x 50) and the Fuente 7⅝ x 49s. Cigar Aficionado also classifies the 7⅝ x 54 Royal Salute as a double corona, and rated two named Churchills as double coronas: the Ashton Churchill (7½ x 52) and the Diamond Crown Classic Churchill No. 2 (7½ x 54)
Corona Doble The name Drew Estate and Foundation give their 7 x 50 and 7 x 54 sizes Liga Privada No. 9, T52 and H99; Undercrown Shade, Maduro and 10; Blackened S84 and M81; The Tabernacle Broadleaf and Havana Seed
Churchill Traditionally 7 x 47; for its tastings Cigar Aficionado counts any cigar 6¾ to 7⅜ inches long with a ring of at least 47 By that rule the 7-inch Corona Dobles fall in Cigar Aficionado's Churchill group; Cigar Insider called the S84 Corona Doble "this veiny Churchill."

The Fuente double coronas

Fuente's double coronas run 7⅝ x 49. The OpusX Rare Black Double Corona is the longest of the five Rare Black sizes; Cigar Inspector reported in August 2024 that the release was rolled in 2017 and aged since, and Cigar Aficionado notes the regular-blend Fuente Fuente OpusX Double Corona was its No. 1 Cigar of 2005. The God of Fire by Carlito Double Corona is the longest by Carlito size, Cameroon over Dominican tobacco, aged two to three more years before release; for the 2013 shipment, Keith Park put the run at about 500 boxes per cigar. The Casa Fuente Double Corona is the house cigar Fuente makes for the Casa Fuente store in Las Vegas. The Añejo Reserva No. 49 is the longest Añejo, its Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper "aged in Cognac barrels," in Fuente's words; Cigar Aficionado rated it 91 in June 2025. The Chateau Fuente Royal Salute comes in Natural, Maduro and Sun Grown at 7⅝ x 54, each cigar in a cedar sleeve; Cigar Aficionado rated the Natural mild (88, June 2023) and the Sun Grown medium (89, August 2024). See God of Fire by Carlito, Arturo Fuente Añejo, Royal Salute and Opus X Rare Black and X Rare Purple.

Macanudo, AVO, Ashton and Diamond Crown

The Macanudo Café Prince Philip is a 7½ x 49 in Connecticut Shade that Cigar Aficionado scored 88 in February 2015 and rated mild to medium; it is the second-longest of the 21 Café sizes Macanudo lists. Its Maduro twin wears Connecticut Broadleaf, also mild to medium. The AVO Classic No. 3 is a 7½ x 50 rolled at Davidoff's OK Cigar factory; Cigar Aficionado scored the original AVO No. 3 90 in December 1992. Two Connecticut Shade Churchills sit in Cigar Aficionado's double corona category: the Ashton Churchill (7½ x 52), one of Ashton's six original 1985 sizes, which the magazine rated mild in 2021 and 2023, and the Diamond Crown Classic Churchill No. 2 (7½ x 54), which J.C. Newman rates mild. See Macanudo, AVO, Ashton Classic and Diamond Crown.

Choosing a double corona

  • Milder: the Macanudo Café Prince Philip, the Ashton Churchill, the Diamond Crown Classic Churchill No. 2, the Royal Salute Natural and the Blackened S84 Corona Doble.
  • Fuller: the Liga Privada Corona Dobles and the Undercrown Maduro.
  • Top 25: the Liga Privada No. 9 Corona Doble, No. 10 for 2015.
  • Allocated: the OpusX Rare Black, the God of Fire by Carlito and the Casa Fuente Double Corona.
  • The longest: the 7⅝-inch Fuentes.

How long does a double corona take?

Cigar Aficionado's glossary puts a 7½ x 50 double corona at over an hour, and the magazine says a Churchill should take at least an hour and a half; your pace decides the rest. It suggests a puff "every 30 seconds to a minute," since overpuffing overheats the cigar. Our how to smoke a cigar guide covers the rest.

What to pour with a double corona

Drew Estate gives two pairings: Mexican hot chocolate or a single malt Scotch with Undercrown 10, and espresso or a Cabernet Sauvignon with the Liga Privada T52. Our house suggestions for the rest: a cognac with the Añejo No. 49, for its Cognac-barrel-aged wrapper; an Irish whiskey with the Macanudo Café Prince Philip; a sherry-cask Scotch such as the Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak with the God of Fire by Carlito; and a bourbon with some age, or a peated single malt, with The Tabernacle Broadleaf. Our cigar and whiskey pairing guide has more, and in the lounge you can ask the bar for a pour from the spirits menu.

Keeping them fresh

Store them at a steady 65 to 70 percent relative humidity, in a humidor or a sealed bag with a two-way humidity pack. Every order ships with a Boveda humidity pack, and our cigar storage guide covers the rest.
